Plenty of domestic animals and even human offspring die shortly after birth and that's even with the medicine being considerably easier than a zoo situation. Sometimes the roll of the dice just doesn't go your way.
I wouldn’t say EEHV yet. They said they used antibiotics which would be ineffective against that a viral infection like EEHV. What a blow to zoos as a whole. This calf was a shining light on what was a bad year for Columbus. My sympathies to the keepers.
You may be correct but antibiotics are almost always used in the face of viral infections to prevent bacterial overgrowth
Initial results put the elephant calf’s cause of death as a bacterial infection of the intestines. Dr. Junge gave this interview that should answer a lot of our questions. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=362598651237019
Well I least there’s some closure now. I don’t mean to be harsh but I don’t think Columbus is gonna get over these giraffe and elephant deaths anytime soon. Has PETA said anything about these deaths yet?
Colombus zoo has named the deceased elephant calf, ‘Ellie’ after the name won a public naming competition. After the sudden death of elephant calf, Columbus Zoo names it Ellie
Why do you keep bringing up PETA and asking what they think? Everyone knows what they think about zoos.
I know. But wouldn’t u think there would be some outrage from people like them? Have u seen the way they react to Billy in Los Angeles Zoo?
But so what? PETA nutjobs are outraged at everything that happens with animals. Asking what they are saying is like asking whether the moon is in the sky. You already know the answer. Why give them a platform?
I’m not. But I’m worried that people LIKE them are gonna sue Columbus. That is ALL. I’m just worried that some organization like them is gonna investigate Columbus or sue them for these deaths.
Colombus says the recent newborn deaths won’t deter their breeding program: Newborn deaths won't deter Columbus Zoo breeding program
PETA and alike organizations try to pull stunts like that all of the time. Even if they do, how far do you really think there going to get?
