On the 3rd of October a European bison (Bison bonasus) was born to 17-year old female Urgania.

In April the zoo received 1,1 Harlequin quails (Coturnix delegorguei).

In April female Eastern Atlantic harbour seal (Phoca vitulina vitulina) Thyra arrived from Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen. According to the instagram post, she was born in Emmen in 2017.

On the 2nd of April 2 European wildcats (Felis silvestris silvestris) were born, a male and a female.

In May the zoo received 2 male Diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin). Not sure from where, but there are only 5 holders in Europe according to ZTL.

On the 5th of May a Javan mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus) was born.

In May also 2 Bearded emperor tamarins (Saguinus imperator subgrisescens) were born.

In May 3 Alpine marmots (Marmota marmota marmota) were born.

in June 2 Snowy Owls (Bubo scandiacus) hatched.

On the 3rd of June a male European bison (Bison bonasus) was born and on the 1st of November another European bison was born.

In June a European boreal owl (Aegolius funereus funereus) hatched.

In July already 3 Dalmatian pelicans (Pelecanus crispus) hatched.

Last Monday 2 male European bisons (Bison bonasus) that were born in 2019 together with 7 other bison from European Zoos were send to the Caucasus. Coming spring they will be released in the core area of the Shahdag National Park in Azerbaijan.

Bernd Schildger the director of Tierpark Bern retired at the start of this year, he was the director of the zoo for almost 25 years! During his leadership he redesigned 90% of the zoo space in order to make more room for less animals.

Does anyone know if the Polar foxes are kept together with their Musk oxen? If I remember correctly, there seemed to be a connection between these two exhibits, although I didn't saw any fox with the oxen. Sadly I haven't found anything helpful yet.

 

The polar fox enclosure used to be connected with the reindeer, but since the hares moved into the reindeer enclosure, I assume the foxes don't have access anymore.

 

Correction 7 boars were born.

On the 17th of July a Eastern Atlantic harbour seal (Phoca vitulina vitulina) was born, it's the first time since 2016 that a harbour seal has been born in Tierpark Bern.

Do they still keep Arctic terns?

 

According to both ZTL and the zoo's website they do!

 

The status on ztl haven't been updated in 1,5 years.And zoo's own websites tend to be pretty unreliable from my experience.

 

Good point, perhaps you can send them an email.

 

The Tierpark Bern website is one of the most reliable. Around the end of the year they normally post a full species list and they update the rest regularly.
