The Dallas Zoo's most exciting happening this year will likely be the opening of Simmons Hippo Outpost, a 3.5 acre complex that will be home to hippos, saddle-billed storks, red river hogs, and okapi. (Note: was previously assured by a staff member the hippo exhibit itself was 3 acres, but have since learned otherwise.) The Wilds of Africa Adventure Safari Monorail will be closed January 10-12 and 17-19 for annual renovations.
Have they started construction on the new hippo complex yet and/or announced where it will be built along the monorail line?
Yes, construction has been under way for months. It is before all the other exhibits, taking the space of what was formerly the okapi exhibit. I posted some early construction photos a few days ago.

They have constructed their komodo dragon exhibits in the reptile house and have furnished them with bamboo. I am expecting their addition soon, but am surprised to see no press release on them yet.
Six of the ten elephants can now be consistently seen together: the four "Golden Girls" (Jenny, Gypsy, Congo, and Kamba) as well as the Swaziland elephants Zola and Tendaji (the young male).
Do you know how often the baby one is out with it's mother? Iv'e only seen him out twice, one of the times being more recently when they had the sign saying they were off exhibit out.
I'm not sure, I haven't visited since he went on exhibit (as I'm no longer in-state). They seem to do rotations throughout the day, so perhaps check in both the morning and the afternoon, or ask a keeper. I imagine they'd take introductions slowly with him.

About a year ago it was every other day or so, however I do not think they do it anymore, or will yet, since the new elephants from Africa arrived. I certainly haven't seen them mixed in in a long time of going there fairly frequently.

The Dallas zoo has opened their "giants of the herpetarium" wing. Included are komodo dragons, crocodile monitors, and a king cobra. This is the construction I had referenced before, and I will go sometime next week to take pictures of it. Also if they built a new exhibit for the king cobra, then something new is taking place where the old king cobra was.
I have not seen any specific dates, but it has been said from the start to be sometime this Spring, meaning it will be open very soon. I will be sure to take pictures of it when it's open as well.
