Paleontologists have invented new laser technology to detect pigments in dinosaur eggs. They found that both avian and non-avian dinosaurs had pigments in their eggs, meaning that color in eggshells evolved before birds did. The color of eggs seems to correlate with whether the eggs were out in the open (colored) or not (white eggs), and thus may have have some camouflage function.
