The list below does not include several private facilities that aren’t open to the public, but how many other zoos am I missing? There are several nature centers with very small animal collections but are they worth visiting? Are there some natural history museums with significant animal collections that could qualify as a "zoo"? I already posted a comprehensive list of Texas zoos and ended up with around 50, as well as a list of 60 California zoos. Florida has at least 60 zoos but the leader of the three huge states in terms of AZA-accredited zoos is clearly California. Texas: 50 zoos and 16 are AZA-accredited. Florida: 60 zoos and 16 are AZA-accredited. California: 60 zoos and 23 are AZA-accredited. 61 Florida Zoos: Audubon Center for Birds of Prey (Maitland) Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge (Orlando) Big Cat Rescue (Tampa) Brevard Zoo (Melbourne)* Busch Gardens Tampa Bay (Tampa)* Busch Wildlife Sanctuary (Jupiter) Butterfly World (Coconut Creek) Central Florida Zoo (Sanford)* Clearwater Marine Aquarium (Clearwater) Dade City’s Wild Things (Dade City) Discovery Cove (Orlando) Disney’s Animal Kingdom (Lake Buena Vista)* Dolphin Connection (Duck Key) Dolphin Rescue Center (Grassy Key) Dolphins Plus (Key Largo) Everglades Alligator Farm (Homestead) Everglades Safari Park (Miami) Flamingo Gardens (Davie) Florida Aquarium (Tampa)* Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center (Stuart) Gatorama (Palmdale) Gatorland (Orlando) Giraffe Ranch (Dade City) Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park (Fort Walton Beach) Gulf Breeze Zoo (Gulf Breeze) Gulf World Marine Park (Panama City Beach) Gumbo Limbo Nature Center (Boca Raton) Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park (Homosassa) Jacksonville Zoo (Jacksonville)* Jungle Adventures (Christmas) Jungle Island (Miami) Key West Aquarium (Key West) Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory (Key West) Lion Country Safari (Loxahatchee)* Loggerhead Marinelife Center (Juno Beach) Marineland Dolphin Adventure (St. Augustine) Marine Science Center (Ponce Inlet) Miami Seaquarium (Virginia Key) Monkey Jungle (Miami) Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium (Sarasota)* Naples Zoo (Naples)* Palm Beach Zoo (West Palm Beach)* Safari Wilderness (Lakeland) Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo (Gainesville)* Sarasota Jungle Gardens (Sarasota) Sasquatch Zoo (Crestview) SeaWorld Orlando (Orlando)* Shell Factory & Nature Park (North Fort Myers) Silver Springs Nature Park (Silver Springs) Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce (Fort Pierce) St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park (St. Augustine)* Tallahassee Museum (Tallahassee) Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo (Tampa)* Tarpon Springs Aquarium (Tarpon Springs) Theater of the Sea (Islamorada) The Seas (Lake Buena Vista)* Tree Hill Nature Center (Jacksonville) White Oak Conservation Center (Yulee) Wooten’s Animal Sanctuary (Ochopee) Zoo Miami (Miami)* ZooWorld (Panama City Beach) * 16 zoos in Florida are AZA-accredited.

update to FL zoos and exotic animal sanctuaries Silver Springs Nature Park closed, all animals sold and now property is part of state park. Sasquatch Zoo sold and now Emerald Coast Zoo. Many private exotic animal sanctuaries housing birds and mammals and not open to public are listed under USDA APHIS licensed exhibitors. Michigan State University Zoology Department maintains list of zoos, etc, that are non-AZA members. Zoological Society of America ZAA headquartered in Punta Gorda, FL, MAY provide a list of their member facilities.

I'd count Aquatica separately from SeaWorld (it's a separate entrance and separate ticket). Has Commerson's Dolphins, cichlids and some 'education' animals (of which I only saw African Spurred Tortoises). Also Save Our Seabirds Sanctuary (opposite Mote but unconnected - Save our Seabirds Gallery) and Peace River Wildlife Centre in Punta Gorda (Peace River Wildlife Centre Gallery) - if Busch Wildlife Sanctuary is on the list these two ought to be as well. EDIT: Just noticed you had Discovery Cove separate - if so you certainly should have Aquatica as well!
Thanks for the 3 additions! Texas might have 51 zoos and California almost 70 but Florida is edging towards 80 and clearly America's #1 state in terms of the quantity of captive wildlife institutions.
additions in FL- Pioneer Park and Zoo, Hardee Co. Zolpho Springs/Wachula; Lions, Tigers, Bears Rescue, Arcadia; Center for Great Apes, Wachula, open to members only, Lemur Research Center, Myakka City. Growing up in FL during 50-60s I visited many roadside zoos and reptile exhibits now extinct. I have them on my visited list.
Pioneer Park & Zoo (Zolpho Springs) is an incredibly tiny place but thanks for the addition! Lions, Tigers & Bears Inc. (Arcadia) is another one to add to the list. The Center for Great Apes I'm not going to include because one can only visit if they contribute a minimum of $250 and become a member. Lastly, Myakka City Lemur Reserve does not seem to be open to the public and thus I will not include it, although their website is packed with lots of information.
I just noticed that because I requested it to be added, Peace River has a UK 'Centre' rather than a US 'Center' on ZooChat. Ha!/Oops!

Everglades Outpost in Florida City / Homestead. Learn about the Everglades in an up-close and personal way. (Not to be confused with Everglades Alligator Farm a couple miles away). When I was there last summer I spent a night in Florida City and drove right by Everglades Outpost on my way to Everglades National Park. I had no time to stop but it looked so small that I doubt it would be worth my time. Right from the highway I could see a small yard next to the highway with a camel and a zebra.
the everglades outpost is an exotic animal rescue facility and its run by some wonderful people, I hope you visit someday and get to know the people that have put their lives into this place.
Robert Is Here is a south florida produce stand west of Homestead, Fl which has a small free menagerie with a few exotic. native, and domestic critters on exhibit.
Just back from a week or so in Florida and I can add one or two to the list(only one of which I had time to visit), in Miami there is Safari Edventure and the Zoological Wildlife Foundation, both of which would appear to be bespoke animal encounters, but then so are others on S.L.`s list. There is the small St Lucie County Aquarium too.Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary is also omitted I just noticed..and I did go there(rather a smelly dump, not a patch on Save Our Seabirds at Mote). Of more concern are one or two of the exhibits at the former Parrot Jungle(now Jungle Island) where some of the primate cages would not have shamed the roadside zoos of yore..even worse is "Lemur Encounter",whereby 7 ruffed lemurs of two types live indoors (on an island full of trees/vegetation remember) in a 7 by 3 lab cage inside a kitchen-type room, awaitng a expensively paid-for release into the kitchen and the laps of an adoring public.Did we really breed these rare species in captivity to end up in this situation? Totally disgusting...Of course I made my feelings felt at the zoo itself,no point walking away and being brave behind a computer! The encounter hides behind "conservation" and "education" needless-to-say.

It has been almost a year since I updated this list and I'm intrigued to see if I'm missing any facilities. There are at least 90 "zoos" in Florida that are open to the public, far more than any other state in the USA as California is next with approximately 70 zoos and then in third place is Texas with approximately 50 zoos. I've already toured just about every zoo in Texas; by August I'll have hopefully seen just about every zoo in California, but a Florida trip is many years down the road due to location and cost. 90 Florida Zoos: (aquariums are in bold) Aquatica Orlando (Orlando) Audubon Center for Birds of Prey (Maitland) Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge (Orlando) Big Cat Habitat & Gulf Coast Sanctuary (Sarasota) Big Cat Rescue (Tampa) Brevard Zoo (Melbourne)* Busch Gardens Tampa Bay (Tampa)* Busch Wildlife Sanctuary (Jupiter) Butterfly World (Coconut Creek) Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium (Fort Myers) Central Florida Zoo (Sanford)* Clearwater Marine Aquarium (Clearwater) Conservancy of Southwest Florida (Naples) Dade City’s Wild Things (Dade City) Discovery Cove (Orlando)* Disney’s Animal Kingdom (Lake Buena Vista)* Dolphin Connection (Duck Key) Dolphin Research Center (Grassy Key) Dolphins Plus (Key Largo) Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge Zoological Park (Crestview) Everglades Alligator Farm (Homestead) Everglades Outpost Wildlife Rescue (Homestead) Everglades Safari Park (Miami) Flamingo Gardens (Davie) Florida Aquarium (Tampa)* Florida’s Adventures in Paradise (Merritt Island) Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters (Marathon) Florida Museum of Natural History: Butterfly Rainforest (Gainesville) Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center (Stuart) Gatorama (Palmdale) Gatorland (Orlando) Giraffe Ranch (Dade City) Golf N Gator (Cape Canaveral) Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park (Fort Walton Beach) Gulf Breeze Zoo (Gulf Breeze) Gulf World Marine Park (Panama City Beach) Gumbo Limbo Nature Center (Boca Raton) Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park (Homosassa) Imaginarium Science Center (Fort Myers) Jacksonville Zoo (Jacksonville)* John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Visitor Center (Key Largo) Jungle Adventures (Christmas) Jungle Island (Miami) Key West Aquarium (Key West) Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory (Key West) Lion Country Safari (Loxahatchee)* Lions, Tigers & Bears, Inc.
