Probably one of my simplest ideas for Danish Nature Park: The Butterfly Garden.

A garden with native plants, flowers and butterflies. The plants would be host plants for the caterpillars, which would be introduced to the garden early on. Native flowers would be chosen for their fragrance, color and nutritional value for butterflies to make certain the butterflies could eat throughout the whole season. Certain ”homes” (piles of wood or rocks, little huts etc.; could easily be made decorative) would provide wintering grounds for the butterflies.

To make the whole garden extra lovely, I would make a pool with a fountain in the center of the garden, with little creeks and waterfalls flowing throughout the whole area. This would also provide water for the butterflies. The garden would be bright, open, fragrant and colorful, with flowers and butterflies everywhere, and as the visitor walks through the garden s/he hears the chuckling of little creeks and waterfalls.

Signs would describe each species of butterfly, and the Butterfly Garden would also serve a conservational purpose, as certain butterflies are highly endangered in Denmark.

What do you think? I'm looking forward to hear your responses! :)

It would be interesting to integrate such an area in any zoo (even in large towns).
It may be coupled with insect hotels, nest boxes or other structures in favour of local biodiversity, and adequate information for the public.
There would be pedagogical animations in this kind of places, that eventually would be replicated elsewhere.

Sounds delightful. Would it be closed during winter? Is there anything you might add to keep visitors coming in the winter?
