Female giant otter Brazilia has left Givskud Zoo. Thanks to good training, everything went very well. On the way to France a stopover was made in Leipzig. From Leipzig Zoo a male was also taken to La Palmyre. Together they will form a new breeding pair.

In Givskud Zoo only two giant river otters remain, mother Frieda and son Rio. A new partner for Rio will be found, so that there will be a breeding pair in Givskud again.

Female giant otter Korona has moved from Lodz Zoo to Doué la Fontaine to form a pair with the resident male Iquitos. She has been given a new name in Doué; from now on she will be called Iberá. Iquitos and Iberá seem to get along very well.

Two giant otters were born in Budapest Zoo five months ago. Parents are Madidi and Cumana. At the end of 2020, they also had two cubs, who are now helping to raise them. From 12 March, visitors will be able to see the cubs.

If I translated the text on the website correctly, they are talking about the two older brothers, so the 2020 cubs Manú and Bahia would then both be males.

Three giant otters were born in Zoo Leipzig on the 17th of March. The parents are Tacutu and Emila. Unfortunately, Tacutu died at the beginning of the year. Because of this, Emila will have to raise the cubs herself, although she gets help from the older cubs who still live in Leipzig.

In Chorzow Zoo (Katowice Zoo) / Poland a big South American House is being build. One of the main part of the building will be a giant otters exhibit. Should be ready at the beginning of 2023. Interesting who can we get to start a new family.

Four giant otters were born in Zoo Zlin at the beginning of June. The cubs are staying in the indoor enclosure with their mother Mora, while daughter Dana is also helping with the care. Father Dagget and two other cubs remain separated from them for the time being. They will probably be reunited in the second half of August.

Three giant otters were born in the Yorkshire Wildlife Park at the beginning of July. In a few weeks time, they will probably also venture outside. The gender of the cubs is not yet known.

At Givskud Zoo, 13-year-old giant otter Frida has been euthanised. There were several reasons for this. She is too old to have any more young. In addition, her health had also deteriorated last summer. It would not have been in the animal's wellbeing to wait until things got even worse and wait to euthanise her then.

A new female will soon arrive to form a pair with the remaining male Rio, Frida's son. This female could not be introduced to Rio while Frida was still there.

The 2-year-old giant otter Tama has moved from Zoo Madrid to Zoo Halle. Here she will form a pair with the already present male Anori. He was alone after female Amana died some time ago at the advanced age of 17.

Besides this list, this time I have also made a short overview of what, as far as I know, happened within the European population last year.

    Births
To my knowledge, 13 giant otters have been born last year that are currently still alive. They are 9 males, 1 female and 3 whose gender is still unknown.

    Deaths
To my knowledge, four giant otters have died last year. Male Tacutu (11) and females Amana (17) and Frieda (13) were already of advanced age. Female Brazilia (3) drowned after getting stuck underwater.

    Transfers
To my knowledge, 5 giant otters have moved to another zoo last year. In addition, 1 more giant otter has moved to Iberá National Park in Argentina. Here she will later be released into the wild.

    Number of holders
Last year saw the addition of one new holder of giant otters. In early 2022, two giant otters moved to Zoo de La Palmyre in France.

    Future holders
There will also be new holders for the giant otter this year. Two zoos in Germany, (Tierpark Cottbus and Allwetterzoo Münster) and one in Poland (Zoo Chorzów) will most likely get giant otters later this year.
