The Detroit Zoological Society has plans for a third site, the Great Lakes Center for Nature, which will be mainly an aquarium. The proposed facility will cost $15 Million. Quote from Detroit Zoo website: "The Great Lakes Center for Nature will be home to a number of Great Lakes fish, including lake sturgeon – and will focus on conservation efforts for these and other endangered species. It will include habitats for native amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, shorebirds, and birds of prey – many of which will have been rescued and are non-releasable – and will also feature a native butterfly garden." There appears to be some issue with finding a location for the facility: Local officials concerned about potential site for Detroit Zoo nature center in Macomb – Macomb Daily
As reported here, the project has officially been cancelled, and all mentions of the project have been removed from the Detroit Zoo website.
And that's the end of that. What about the proposed $150 million, brand-new Detroit Aquarium that was first mentioned around 2018? Is that also dead in the water? (pun intended)
I was under the impression that the Great Lakes Center for Nature was just a scaled-back version of the aquarium plans in the first place.
