Since 2012 Hagenbeck keeps in it's Eismeer-complex an all-male group of King penguins and now recieved 2 new males from Zoo Berlin. The 2 males - in Berlin known as Stan and Oli - didn't show any intrest in the Berlin females and only had eyes for eachother ;).
At Hagenbeck they are not the only gay penguin-pair because also 2 males of the Humboldt penguins are homosexual.

There are no"gay"animals, because this would be mean the extinction of eevyr sexual reprpducing species on the world. Of course some animals show homosexual behavoiur, but this hasn't nothing to do with reproduction.

As "Gay"known penguins have bred with femals, after the gay couples were seperated and provided with new fenmales, so the same thing is happening now in this case.

Because"gay" penguins or flamingos are always a good story for the newspapers, it it used by the media, but is has nothing to do with the truth.

2007 the Tropen-Aquarium opened, in 2012 the Eismeer (re)opened. Is there a new new big exhibit on the horizon ?

I wouldn't hold your breath in the near future; certainly there was no sign of anything of that sort when I visited in June 2016.

From Facebook, the young female walrus Loki has died. When I visited in March she seemed in good health other than having a very enlarged goiter. Though I'm guessing that this was the inflated gular throat sac, and it didn't seem to cause her any issues in the water, I'd be interested to see if this had any influence.

One of the Walruses looked pregnant again with a bigger belly and very obvious nipples, this walrus was also taken indoors from 3 pm onwards...

They seem to have stocked up their seabird aviary again and now hold 3 Razorbill, 10 Common guillemot, 1 Pigeon guillemot and 5 Atlantic puffins and Arctic tern and three duck species.

It was my first visit to Hagenbeck and because my expectations were somewhat downgraded before, I had a very enjoyable day. Overall the zoo gives the impression as if nothing has changed since 1990, with some exceptions: the Eismeer is very nicely done, especially the Walk-in sub-Antarctic penguin fridge and the Walruses. Though I don't understand the need for such a bad Polar bear enclosure. The Orangutan enclosure seemed like a waste of money, given the space and possibilities. The Tropen-Aquarium was also somewhat disappointing as it was felt like it was overflowing with exhibits and the theming managed to exactly not pull it off and reminded me of Ouwehands: lots of superfluous thematization, cramped and no coherence whatsoever.

And I was flabbergasted by the amount of food stands, in some areas there was literally one every 10 meters and nowhere could you walk more than 100 meters before encountering one....

I uploaded a bunch of enclosure and overview photos in the gallery:
