Black Guillemot is pretty exciting. I don't think there any any Pigeon Guillemots on this side of the Atlantic since the Living Coasts group died out.

According to Zootierliste, the last Black guillemot at the zoo and by extension the last one in Europe, died in July.

Additionally most of the Puffins also died during the heatwave, leaving 1. Hagenbeck really seems to have a problem keeping their Alcids alive in that enclosure, first it was wild predators and now heat stress.... On the Zoofreunde forum someone estimated that over 20 puffins must have died over the past years in Hamburg...

Puffins probably do not do well in non-acclimatised exhibits in temperate regions.

Which is strange considering this species is native to temperate regions - they are very common around here :) that said, the population of Tufted Puffin at Living Coasts has lasted a pretty long time and they are at a rather warmer latitude than Hamburg!

I think there is a decent chance the issue in this case is the orientation and cladding of the exhibit, as I seem to recall it is something of a suntrap and retains heat very efficiently.

This is something I had been hinting at.

At LC as it is location-wise on the coastline and it also has a good breeze over it.

In Bern they also do very well, but there is constant shade in most of the aviary and they actively cool the water and I believe also the air in some parts of the aviary.

Interestingly, there is a private individual in Niedersachsen which keeps and breeds Puffins.

I believe they were, in fact, the source of the Hamburg animals in question :) not only the puffins, but the other auks held in the exhibit too.

    Merry Christmas Everyone.

Asian Elephant Birth on Christmas Eve. Male born to 28 year-old Lai Sinh. Sire is Gajendra, who moved back to Munich in late March 2017. Lai Sinh's last calf, Assam (M), who is now at Antwerp was born in April 2012. Lai Sinh's 11 year-old daughter gave birth to her first calf Raj (M) in May. Raj and the new calf will be great playmates and growing-up buddies/brothers. Great to see the Tierpark Hagenbeck Elephant Herd end the year on a high, after a few lows.

On Jan. 1 Chinese crocodile-tailed lizards were born and the days after more followed. In total 14 young were born this time. It's already the 5th time this species bred succesfully at Hamburg :).
