You can now vote on the name choice for the Hamilton Zoo Tiger Cubs. Short list is: Male - Maliki, Senja, Kembali Female - Aalia, Kirana, Jaya Vote for our tiger cub names - Hamilton Zoo
Senja = breeding tigress at Wellington Zoo Kembali = tiger at Taronga Zoo Kirana = Sali's first cousin Jaya = Sali's brother at Perth Zoo as well as the young tigress at Dreamworld Do we really need three tigers called Jaya? I'll be voting for Maliki and Aalia, regardless of my preference for the other four names for the sake of diversity Personally my vote went for Kepala: Indonesian for chief. It's a good masculine name for the male cub, and of course ties with Hamilton (Waikato's) rugby team: the Cheifs. If the zoo had wanted to go for a Hamilton theme here, they could have chosen an Indonesian name to reflect birthday/celebration etc. as these cubs were born in 2014: Hamilton's 150th birthday.
The Tiger Cubs names have been voted as Kembali for the male and Kirana for the female. Hamilton Zoo's tiger cubs named | Stuff.co.nz
A new exhibit is being constructed for Hamilton Zoo's Siamang Gibbons, due to be completed by October 2015. I have posted a photo of the sign which includes a couple of plans - http://www.zoochat.com/313/sign-new-siamang-gibbon-exhibit-412043/
Hamilton has a couple of new female ostriches on their savannah. Couple of photos here (the waterbuck look good): https://www.facebook.com/HamiltonZooNZ/photos/pcb.470960253082296/470959699749018/?type=1&theater
It would be nice to see a group of young Ostrich in that savannah exhibit; I don't think I've ever seen them at Hamilton, although I have seen eggs (but before they were in the savannah).
Oooh, no I don't, but I shall look into it. Something like an iguana would have been nice, but I have no idea what they've gone with.
some new photos put up on the zoo's Facebook showing the construction of the new siamang exhibit (scheduled to be completed in October): https://www.facebook.com/HamiltonZooNZ/photos/pcb.474693202709001/474693016042353/?type=1&theater
Does this open the door for other species of Antelope to be imported from Australia? Species such as SH Oryx, Addax, Eland etc are all in decent numbers in Australia to be able to export.
there's no door to be opened. Antelope have been able to be imported from Australia for a long time. They can also be imported from South Africa, the USA, Canada, Singapore.....
ruffed lemur triplets at the zoo, born two weeks ago: https://www.facebook.com/HamiltonZo...2682851576705/526094804235507/?type=3&theater
This is excellent news. I really like Ruffed Lemurs and would like to see them held in more zoos. They always seem to be displayed in pairs, are they not as social as Ring-tailed Lemurs?
ruffed lemur social groups seem to be quite a complex affair: Primate Factsheets: Ruffed lemur (Varecia) Behavior
