    Set on 8ha of land, the zoo officially opened on 01/01/1982 and closed the same decade. It suffered a major flood in 1983 - which is the main focus of the article.

    The zoo received it’s animals from New Zealand zoos, which contributed surplus stock from their collections. This included lions and ‘Bengal’ tigers from Orana Wildlife Park; Collared peccaries, descended from Wellington Zoo’s 1969 import; and Indian antelope from Auckland Zoo (who once held a large herd).
