That's cool, when I was at the honolulu zoo this april I saw the sun bear exhibit and it looked way better than any other sun bear exhibit in the states. The whole exhibit had no fake rocks and only substrate and live trees for the bear to climb on.

Good Idea, and the singapur zoo will send his polar bears to the Anchorage zoo to stimulate them...

It has nothing to do with the climate, if animals do not breed. Maybe the zoo should change the partners of the bornean sun beaers, and another magic word in Us-Zoos is:A.I.

Artifical Insemination doesnt always work (and it is being tried)...the new bornean sun bear population has been very tricky with only one birth since the imporations. Animals have been moved around several times in hopes for reproductive stimulation...Honolulu just happens to be a Sun Bear SSP institution that happens to be in the tropics needing more sun bears, it couldnt hurt to think it might also stimulate breeding.

Hasn't San Diego had two births so far? Or do you mean one successful pairing?

Those are great news! When I went last year, the area where the exhibit is going to be located looked great and it looked to be at least three times or bigger than their current exhibit.

So is this good news or not? Honolulu Zoo is a small zoo with some ok exhibits and one rather nice section. San Francisco is a zoo in decline. Honolulu Zoo still needs to finish their new elephant habitat, but I'm unfamiliar with the progress with that.

Ask the staff at Los Angeles or San Francisco. I think you'd get an overwhelming response......
