I am following Houston Zoo webcam for giraffes, zebras and ostriches. The giraffes have a high food feeder that the other animals can not reach. Two times a day they feed the giraffes from a platform. The zebras and ostriches gives nothing. They are waiting for food in front of the platform but its to high for them. I feel really sorry for these animals.
Feeding the animals The ostriches and zebras lives together in the same yard. I think they feed the animals but you can see they looking for food together with the giraffes in front of their feeding platform. If you follow the webcam there are no visible food stations for ostriches and zebras. It does look a bit strange. They feed the giraffes 11.00 and 14.00 every day.
The feeding platform is just for the public to feed the giraffes. It isn't their primary food source and it is up to the giraffes as to whether they come to the platform or not at that time. For their main foods, giraffes have to be fed from high feeding stations because that is how they eat. Ostriches, zebra and antelope are fed at ground level, because that is how they eat.
Just because there are no feed stations for the zebra and ostrich doesn't mean that there aren't any. Giraffe naturally eat from high feeding stations, so that's why the platforms are high. Of course the zebra and ostrich will look for food underneath, that's what they are supposed to do all day in the wild (graze/forage). Why feel sorry for them? I can guarantee you that they are getting fed the proper amounts.
