Pigeons and doves are fascinating animals and are one of my favorite bird families. I’m just curious how many species of Columbidae have you all seen, in the wild and in captivity combined. I’ve personally seen 23 species.

100 species in the wild, and although I don’t keep a captive list, at least two others (Nicobar Pigeon and Socorro Dove) in captivity.

A few unrepresented in the gallery there - any photos that may be of use in the relevant photographic taxonomy thread?

I've only had a decent camera and lens for the last 12 months and have really only used it on my trip to Sri Lanka. Anything in particular?

I've seen 71 species in the wild (and also Barbary Dove S. roseogrisea which I don't count on my life list).

No idea on captive species but I'd imagine it would take the total up to around 100.

Using Wikipedia's Columbidae list I made a rough count-up of what I can remember seeing in captivity and it adds an extra 30-ish to my wild list; so about 100 species total.

I'm on 107 species, of which 24 in the wild, Africa & Europe are not great continents for wild pigeons.

I've seen 27 species, only 4 of them wild. And two of those wild ones aren't even native to my continent at all. :p

So I've added photos of Speckled pigeon (South Africa), Sri Lanka wood pigeon, and Asian emerald dove (Sri Lanka). None are particularly good. I do have better photos of lots of other stuff and will start posting some of it.

Not sure how many species I’ve seen, wild or captive, but I’ve bred a dozen or so in my aviaries, and worked with a few more in zoos.

I have seen 3 species in the wild, plus 18 more in captivity. My wild tally will hopefully increase with an upcoming trip.
