Further browsing of the ICBP website reveals they have artificially incubated and reared an Andean condor this year . The egg came from Carl Jones(?) who owns the breeding pair . Also bred are a Steller's sea eagle , bald eagle and Verreaux's eagle .

 

1.0 Eurasian griffon vulture hatched.

 

Recent hatchings include turkey vulture, Tengmalm's owl, hooded vulture and Egyptian vulture, Asian brown wood owl and 0.1 Andean condor.
Recent arrivals include black shouldered kite and Hodgson's Hawk Eagles.

 

The black-shouldered kites they have received are 2015 bred birds .

A second female Andean condor has hatched ( the parents are owned by Carl Jones ) . Hatchings of hooded , Egyptian and turkey vultures were from eggs laid by birds not at Newent . Other 2015 hatchings - Asian brown wood owl , Ural owl , Tengmalm's owl , Brahminy kite , 3 Steller's sea eagle , grey buzzard eagle , Barbary falcon , bald eagle .

4 African pygmy falcons have recently arrived and are being kept indoors until next year.

 

A Palm Nut Vulture has hatched

 

I was there today and saw two of the flying displays - each with 6 or so species flown. Highlights for me in the displays were the Indian Tawny Eagle, Burrowing Owl, Lanner Falcon, Egyptian Vulture and Grey Buzzard Eagle, as well as the 3 Yellow-Billed Kites flown together. Among the other birds to be seen were African Pygmy Falcon, Andean Condor chick, and several new owl species. I have seen Saker falcon in the wild but until you see them up close you cannot tell how absolutely gigantic they are for falcons. Highly recommended for anyone interested in birds of prey or owls.

Unexpected news, the ICBP's homepage states the Newent site is to close. All is not lost however as they will be moving elsewhere, but details are lacking.

Ah, was hoping perhaps I could photograph the presumed King Vulture there someday, but I guess that isn't to happen = S
Can't see myself going to that 'specialist vulture facility' in the nearest future either..

 

i wonder if the 2020 export to Bulgaria (Green Balkans) with 11 birds of prey - 5 lesser kestrels, 3 griffon vultures, 2 Egyptian vultures and 1 saker falcon was a sign of the times. All the more interesting how ICBP will move forward on "conservation issues", and if captive-breeding is even part of that?

Did they have more birds of prey on site (yet)?

 

This is such sad news, ICBP is an amazing place with such an amazing collection of raptors and such an amazing breeding record with species as diverse as Steller's Eagles, Verreaux Eagles, Vultures, Pygmy Falcons to name but a few. JPJ is such an iconic and fearsome conservationist and expert as well as a proud owner of Labradors. I wish I could have been for a visit before it closed. Such a shame, they must be devastated. I wonder if many of the birds will go to Weyhill or their place in Yorkshire?

 

Went there last year they had some amazing birds. We did feel like a lot of the enclosures needed work or replacing though which was a shame.
It states the vultures are going to a specialist facility in Wales does anyone know what place that is? And if it is open to the public?

 

I can't believe Parry Jones has closed down the centre after 55 year. I knew she says that she moving to a new location that will not be open to public it good she forcusing on conservation but that was the whole point of the centre so why close it down and why just the newent centre why not close both newent and helmsley and why close down one day normally a business would announce that they are closing down at this date so you have until then to visit. Something fishy about it.

 

I was caught by surprise when I saw the news - I did have plans to see and photograph the King Vulture that they had in the collection [assuming they still do, unless ZTL is outdated, as it sometimes is] and I can't really see myself in the near future at this specialist vulture facility even further away..
Hopefully I will get the species for my photographic collection someday!
