Tiger cub Oboi has died. The three month old male cub passed away on Sunday from peritonitis. The condition wasn’t contagious and both Odeya and Ohana are healthy. Still this is very devastating news. Source: Yksi Korkeasaaren tiikerinpennuista menetettiin vakavalle sairaudelle
Correction, Oboi was euthanized due to the severity of his condition, instead of him dying because of the peritonitis.
A female musk ox named Jeppel has arrived from Berlin this month. She is now the third musk ox at the zoo. Source: Myskihärkä - Korkeasaari
Nice, the muskox usually spend a lot of time at the back of the enclosure, so it's difficult to see them. Now that the herd is growing hopefully we have more chances to better see them. I wish they have offspring too. On other topic, the male reindeer was euthanised for health problems and a new male has arrived: Perimältään arvokkaalle metsäpeuralle toivotaan jälkeläisiä Korkeasaaressa
Well, I was today at the zoo and I couldn't see the muskox, they need to bring more individuals I guess haha. A lot of animals were very active in the snow today, especially the two tiger cubs, the red pandas and the lynx. One of the bears was out too, and I saw the wolverine running for a few minutes, then suddenly disappeared. Most of the herbivores were active too. The Pallas's cat is still hiding and it has become the new margay for me, I've never seen it yet! Last but not least, the leopard tortoises have moved from sharing with the lemurs to sharing with the tamarins. These tortoises seem to change habitat quite often in the park. Apparently the male was trying to mate, but the female wasn't collaborating
Some news from a visit today: - The tiger cubs have grown a lot and it was very fun watching them play together - There is a new sign (at least I think it’s a new sign) at the Asiatic lion enclosure, about the zoos pack of lions. - The Chantaburi warted tree frogs had some tadpoles swimming around. - The desert side of the Africasia house felt a bit empty and I was only able to spot a single village weaver. - The last Eurasian green-winged teal is gone, leaving only the Tufted ducks and Ruffs in Borealia.
Now's your chance, the male and female are together for the first time and they are very active, running around and mating.

The zoo just released a report on all the important information such as births, new species and conservation fundings from 2022. Source: https://frantic.s3.eu-west-1.amazon.../2023/04/06143742/Korkeasaaren-vuosi_2022.pdf
Unfortunately I've visited the park a couple times since I came back and the Pallas's cats are again invisible to me. I definitely missed my chance being abroad during that time. In other things, a mara was born in April. The renovations at the empty leopard habitat seem to be finished and they have started renovating one of the lioness enclosures. I wonder if they will use the renovated empty leopard enclosure for one of the tigers to give them more space. I also wonder if the zoo will finally get a male lion someday. There are also renovations on the Hämärätalo and it was closed. The area of the black lemurs was also closed for renovations. Last but not least, the marmots are awake! Winter is officially over . I saw three of them today. I think there are 4 males in total, but I'm not sure.
Saw on the zoo’s instagram story that a Pygmy marmoset and an European mink are on their way from Tallinn zoo.
I saw a very young bison calf today, I think it must have been born recently. Do you know how many bisons are there now in total? I counted 7 including the small one.
More birth news in addition to the bison: A muskox was born on 6.5.2023. I missed it yesterday, but I saw it today and it's adorable . It's the first time I see a baby from this species. There's a new European forest reindeer calf. There's a second mara pup. And apart from the births, I saw the Pallas's cat today! She's real!
The Amur leopard cats have been separated in two enclosures: -The current enclosure between red pandas and Amur leopard -The enclosure between the lionesses and the European wild cats According to the website, there are two cats in each enclosure. Other news: there's a second Finnish forest reindeer calf and 4 Goitered gazelle calves.
Some things I spotted from Korkeasaari's web pages, unfortunately these are only in Finnish: - They have got a new amur leopard female (Takara) from Sweden and they hope she'll become mate to their current male. - They are hoping to get a new lion male from India. - They have got a new male, Grimir, wolverine from Belgium. They hope for small wolverines.
Apparently they also have a new fennec fox, but the Hämärätalo is still closed for renovations. I wonder what they're doing.
According to the zoos website, they've received a male Brazilian rainbow boa last month from a private keeper. His terrarium is located in the Amazonia house. Source: Brasiliansateenkaariboa - Korkeasaari
Some updates from today: - There’s some construction going on around the Boreal and Northern hawk owl aviaries. - Some of the Amur leopard cats have moved into the old Amur leopard enclosure next to the European wild cats.
