Attendance report: the zoo just got its 100.000 visitor of the year. They are short of almost 60.000 compared to last year the same date. The zoo comments that it´s mainly due to total closure during April (they sold ca 40.000 tickets in April 2019) and slower months May and June when school groups did not come. July attendance figure is comparable with record last year and especially weekends are stronger. However, composition of visitors has changed. While last year Hungarian tourists made 25%, they are missing now. They were replaced by more Slovaks and some Czechs.
The zoo has brown bears on exhibit again. Two orphaned cubs found in mountains of central Slovakia and ca 6 months old spent some time in rescue station in Zázrivá before they got transported into the zoo. July attendance was 9% higher than last year. Also local town council has offered additional financial support to the zoo, so its future development plans should be secured.
Bird flu infection was proven in two dead domestic ducks at zoo pond. The zoo is closed for at least a month.
On April 3 a male North American porcupine was born by caesarean section because the new born was ( to) big for a natural birth. This is the first birth of this species at Kosice and also the first birth of the species in Slowakia .
The zoo got two new birds. One year old male wreathed hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus) arrived from a private breeder in Czechia, a new species for the zoo. And male Blyth's hornbill (Rhyticeros plicatus) from Jurong bird park in Singapore got imported to be paired with a female obtained from private breeder 4 years ago.
New species in the zoo. Female Corsac fox is a new species on show, on visitors path named Altaj. The zoo wishes to obtain a male. Male Margay is a new inhabitant too, but still kept off-show. A new enclosure should be built soon. The zoo announced also an arrival of a big monitor lizard, however I can´t decipher the exact species (no photo attached and the species name mentioned in the article makes little sense). I guess probably V. salvator. Article
As you said @Jana I suppose it will be asian water monitor due to the length or maybe crocodile monitor.
So, that monitor species is Asian water monitor (identification and pic posted on their FB). 3 young animals. A new species kept is Fiji banded iguana. A juvenile Andean condor female arrived from Krakow zoo. Kosice will keep it only for a time beeing. This animal is destined for rewilding in Argentina. So while money donations for transport overseas are collected, Krakow needed to "store" it somewhere. I guess parents were prepairing for next breeding cycle.
