Europe has Zootierliste and US and Australian zoos are also well documented, but most zoo collections outside these areas go under the radar. Here's a start of an attempt to change that, at least for Pakistan. The following is a non-comprehensive list of mammals species, both current and former, part of Lahore Zoo's collection. Species previously part of the collection will be marked with (*). Dates are added wherever known. @JINX, thanks for your elaborate collection plan for Lahore Zoo. Quite a list, including subspecies where applicable!
Nothing special, at least when it comes to more prolific species, compared to European institutions, but I figured a bit of perspective won't hurt since the whole Islamabad zoo debacle.
No, but the list of species for the region is quite good. I agree, where I put the latter down to administrative lapses, bureaucracy and dereliction of duty of officers both in zoo and municipality. Miffed: no one got persecuted fo it, which is a darn shame.
No Asian elephants were ever kept there? Thanks for the list, it´s always interesting to find out what zoos keep in less notorious parts of the world. If you have time and interest, would you also list species / domestic breeds kept at other collections in and around Lahore? According to wiki, that city has over 11 mio people so it should have more places with animals, maybe an aquarium, petting zoo, botanical garden with few birds I guess. EDIT: and if you have any recent info on breeding wild flamingos from Pakistan, that would be great.
I'll do birds in a while. Reptiles, especially snakes, would be much harder to find for multiple reasons, so that'll take a while. None that have been recorded, maybe a few would've been part of the collection back when it was still India, but far as I know, Suzi was the first and only elephant kept at Lahore. Karachi and Islamabad, on the other both have previously had Asian elephants. Yea there's a few notable collections in and around the city; Jallo Park with a captive breeding program with wild caught sambar deer, Lahore Zoo Safari where the Zoo's addaxes and probably the oryxes were transferred, Changa Manga Reserve Forest with a captive breeding and re-introduction program for white-rumped vultures, to name a few. I'll get to them eventually. As for flamingos; I'll look around for papers, but greater flamingoes are pretty common this time of the year in the mangroves of Port Qasim in Karachi and in smaller numbers elsewhere, all the way north to saline lakes in the Potohar plateau and they've been known to breed at Miani Hor on the coast of Balochistan as recentley as 2015.
