Hopefully this thread will enable others to learn about the Central and South American population of Asian and African elephants, to report any changes or inaccuracies within the population, and to develop a detailed report of Asian and African elephants in Central and South America.

The Mendoza Zoo is closed, but I don't know where their elephants are now.

Also, assuming Zancango's Ted is transferred somewhere, could he theoretically breed?Houston's Thai is 59 and still good, so it could happen.

Even though the Mendoza Zoo is technically closed, the 1.2 Asian elephants and 0.1 African elephant still reside at the facility. The Mendoza Zoo has agreed to send Tamy, Pocha, Guillermina, and Kenya to Elephant Sanctuary Brazil however, the sanctuary is still in the process of preparing the facility for the four of them. Also, the elephants have little to no training so the elephant handlers are currently working with the elephants to prepare them for the trip and eventual life at the sanctuary.

Mendoza Four | Global Sanctuary for Elephants
Mendoza Update | Global Sanctuary for Elephants

The chances of any elephant being imported from Central or South America to North America is very low. Further, it's, to my knowledge, unknown whether Ted is reproductively viable given his age and lack of breeding.

As for Thai, he was born in 1965 so that makes him 54 years old as of this year.

I'm pretty sure you said male elephants can breed no matter how old they get as long as they can mount a female.

I can't recall where or when I said that but ultimately, the fertility of an elephant, whether they're female or male, dictates their reproductive viability. For example, you have an individual like Thai (Houston Zoo) who's 54 years old and still producing calves while on the other hand you have an individual like Casey (Center for Elephant Conservation) who's only produced one calf and has failed to reproduce since.

Wasn't Casey at Fort Worth or Houston for a long time, and then came back to Ringling in exchange for Colonel? I don't recall any calves that he's sired since, so he's another example just like Casey. I'm still wondering about the sire of Columbus's Ellie, mainly because I'm wondering about Hank's fertility.

Casey resided at the Fort Worth Zoo from November 2005 to June 2015. During his time there, he produced a stillborn calf with Babe on January 22, 2008. Sadly, Babe died on January 24, 2008 after complications during labour. In June 2015, Romeo was transferred to the Fort Worth Zoo while Casey was transferred back to the Center for Elephant Conservation. Colonel was transferred from the Endangered Ark Foundation to the Fort Worth Zoo on March 21, 2013.

I'm confused by your statement. Are you referring to Colonel or Casey? Casey has only produced one offspring while Colonel has yet to produce offspring. Colonel is genetically valuable through his father Buke so I'm hopeful his genetics will be represented soon.

Same here. The Columbus Zoo has, to my knowledge, not made public the paternity of Ellie. However, confirming whether Hank or Samson sired Phoebe's calf would determine Hank's reproductive viability and finally answer the question all of us have been wondering since Phoebe's pregnancy annoucement.

Unclear pronoun reference. I meant that Colonel had not sired any calves since his move to FW and that he was essentially in the same boat as Casey in terms of long-term productivity, the opposite of Thai. It took three tries before FW found a solid prospect with Romeo.

Is Tantor really 54 years old? For an African elephant this is respectable. Wherever I was looking for any information about his age, there was information that his age was unknown.

What on Earth happened at the African Safari that 9 elephants born in 2003 all died in 2008? They don't even have 9 females who could have all produced calves in 2003. We all know how frequently EEHV can take 5-year-olds from us, but these are Africans, who are affected by the virus much less frequently. Both the births and deaths of these nine are somewhat alarming. Does anyone know what happened there?!

According to the following sources: Brookfield Zoo veterinarian travels to Colombia for elephant operation | Chicago Parent & Chicago Vets Travel To Colombia To Save Elephant's Tusk | NBC Chicago, Tantor was 47 years old in 2012 thus making him 54 years old as of 2019.

Nothing happened to the African elephants at Africam Safari during that time. When the following is stated: 1.0 Grande 2003.00.00 - 2008.00.00 (LA), it means that the individual was born between 2003 and 2008. Also, the population report I've posted only includes the current living population.

Unfortunately, not much is known publicly about the African elephants at Africam Safari. However, it's known that nine African elephants, three males and six females, ranging from four to nine years old, were imported to Africam Safari in June 2012. Since then, the herd has produced three calves: Sarabi (May 2017), Hoop (September/October 2017), and a female calf (January/February 2019).

Ahh, lol. They looked exactly like birth-to-death data. In a few words, this story just went from terrible to wonderful! Huge sigh of relief.

It is interesting. Tantor is therefore probably the oldest captured African elephant male and also one of the oldest captured African elephants ever. The oldest is Bahati (58 years) at Ramat Gan Zoo. Am I right?

I can confirm that both Sandro and Raisa are still going strong despite their age.

Of the two animals it is Sandro who has the strongest and most mischevious character and is very fond of apples and watermelons too.

How wonderful to have you on Zoo Chat to give us these kinds of details about South and Central American elephants! Personality is the most rewarding thing to watch and enjoy, and before your post, this population was almost entirely just names and numbers on the page. Through you, we can look forward to meeting some a bit more closely!

No problem , glad to help fill out more details on these individual elephants.

As I've said Sandro has a noticeably more mischevious bent than his mate Raisa who has a placid temperament. He shows some behaviours that at times could almost be interpreted (albeit anthromorphically) as having a playful sense of humour.
