A female Red ForestDuiker ? Not good, they need more males, but unfortunately, in the last years, almost females were born. The same happend with the blue duikers, so the red duikers do not have a future in european collections, if they don't import new animals from southafrica. Leipzig has treid it, but it failed, I hope, they will be succesful in the future.

A male red duiker was born in february. Imports are absolutely necessary, that is right...

Leipzig seems to be very succesful in breeding Red forest duikers, twice a year a birth with just one pair, really good. But it would be bettter to breed more endangered duiker species than the Red Forests.

Supposedly it's stress-related. The old Bear Castle at Leipzig would stress any bear out, it's basically a brick pit (was a number of bear pits, now combined).

The large majority of the rest of the zoo is far, far better and they were supposed to be phasing out this exhibit too.

Someone can give me more information about "bald" spectacled bears in Leipzig? Thanks!

The 2,3 spectacled bears are the last bears at the old "Bear-Castle". The sloth bears moved to a new enclosure in 2002, the last polar bear was shipped to Bremerhaven in 2005. Only the 3 female ("Dolores", 15 years old, "Bianca", 15 years old and "Lolita", 11 years old) are suffering from these skin diseases.

Such serious problems never appeared when 5 different species of bears (american black bear, sloth bear, polar bear, brown bear, spectacled bear) lived at the "Bear Castle", connected with much more stress for each species.

Their parents never suffer from such skin diseases, who achieve a great age.

"Dolores" moved the the sloth bear enclosure last year to ameliorate her situation, but it did not work.

The female bears condition looks similar to that of Jambo the male chocolate-coloured chimp at Twycross who has been 'bald' for quite a long time now .

Many years ago the group of hybrid ruffed lemurs at London produced a number of 'bald' offspring , this was a genetic abnormality , possible caused by in-breeding . I have a photo somewhere of one of these - taken in an off-show area .

Elephant bull "Mekong" (born in Vietnam in 1982, at Leipzig since 1984) will move to Prague Zoo in November. "Naing Thein" (born in Myanmar in 1981) from Prague will move to Leipzig to breed with five female elephants ("Trinh" [1982], "Hoa" [1985], "Saida" [1973], "Don Chung" [1982], "Salvana" [1996]) there.

Elephant cow "Trinh" (born in Vietnam in 1982, mother of "Voi Nam", born April 2002 at Leipzig) is probably pregant, sire: "Mekong"...

The Zoo is searching for a adequate new home for their last elephant offspring "Voi Nam" , who is at the brink of sexual maturity.

Interesting. Do oyu know whether this is only a temporary stay for Mekong or is it plan for him to stay in Prague cause they should be building the new enclosure?

I guess Voi Nam is a male, right?

It is supposed to be a longer stay for "Mekong" at Prag and "Naing Thein" at Leipzig. The ownership will not change ("Mekong" - Leipzig, "Naing Thein" - Emmen).

You are right, "Voi Nam" is a male, born in April 2002 ("Mekong" x "Trinh").

According to Zoo Prague web site it look like the swap should be till 2011 (I will post any further news to Europe elephants thread since).
