I only count 4 in my photo taken back in 2002 ... but that doesn't mean there weren't more there, and I have no idea what their names are! [photo=1924;502;06_Auckland_Zoo_-_G-200204H_K544306l_037_34.jpg]Lions - Auckland Zoo - 2002[/photo]
Ngala & Lazarus (South African males), Kura (American female) and Sheeka (Australian female), Amira? (Kura's daughter, fathered by Tonyi or Tombi) and a whole lot of cubs born to Kura and Amira (unless they have been moved)
did i which one and thnz for the info - really helpfull i know of 4 cubs tiombe , zulu , malik and kachanga but more would be nice if you rember any and amira was a cub there to
If I remember correctly there were three litters of 4, 4 and 3 cubs... I seem to remember one of either Sheeka and Kura, (I think these two had all three litters), was hand raised and had 1 of the litters with the other having the other two litters... The non dominant male out of Tonyi or Tombi (can't remember which) sired one of the three litters... Sorry thats quite confusing... E-mail the zoo maybe..?
This is what I can tell you as I lost track after a while May 5th 2001 - 4 female cubs born to Kura - Amali, Amira, Kataza, Kuchani. Kuchanis was sent to Taronga where she has had two cubs of her own, born in August 2003. Two sof the sisters went to Adelaide. 1 stayed at Auckland. 20 Aug 2001 3 female cubs born to Sheeka. All sent to Wellington.
Auckland Zoo Lions Auckland Zoo in 2000 had four lions: Tonyi and Tombo (brothers born 1996 at the Philadelphia Zoo) Female Kura (born 1998) Female Sheeka (born 1999 - handraised at Mogo Zoo) In 2001: Kura gave birth in May to four females: Amali, Amira, Kuchami, Kutaza. The father was Tonyi. Sheeka gave birth in August to three females: Djane, Djembe and Zhara. The father was Tombo. In 2002: Sheeka's cubs Djane, Djembe and Zhara moved to Wellington Zoo Kura's cubs: Amali and Kutaza moved to Adelaide Zoo, Kuchami moved to Taronga Zoo and Amira stayed behind. In 2003: Kuchami gave birth to two cubs in August named Asali and Johari. The father was Taronga's male Jambo. Tonyi and Tombo left Auckland Zoo to go to Melborne Zoo. New male lions arrived at Auckland from South Africa: Lazerus and Ngala. In 2004: In January Amali (renamed Yizi) gave birth to four cubs at the Adelaide Zoo. One died but 2 males and one feamle survived. In March Amira gave birth to two cubs at the Auckland Zoo. A male Zulu and a female Zalika. The father was Lazerus. In May Kura gave birth to four cubs: males Malik and Amari and females Tiombe and Kibara. The father was Lazerus. In 2005: None of the six cubs born at Auckland Zoo in 2004 stayed. Zulu and Malik went to Wellington. Amari to Mogo Zoo and the feamles Zalika, Tiombe and Kibara to Monarto Zoo. 2006-2008: Auckland Zoo now has five lions: Kura, Sheeka, Amira, Lazerus and Ngala. Sheeka can no longer breed and Kura and Sheeka are on contraceptive implants. Did you know: Tonyi and Tombo had another lion in their litter, a sister called Nakanda who was a white lion. Therefore Auckland Zoo's youngest lioness Amira (Tonyi's daughter) carries the white lion gene (I think!).
Looks like Nigel, Chlidonais and I have had our rein ended as most knowledgable members on the topic of Auckland Zoo...
I wouldn't include me in that line-up . I've only been there once and that was about fifteen years ago!
I just found out that Lazarus is moving to the Cairns Wildlife Park. The zoo will resume breeding Kura and Amira, with their other male, Ngala.
does any one no any info about auckland zoo old lions trixie aAND VICTOR and who wre the lions at the zoo in the 1980 and 70
Lazarus still hasnt moved due to issues with Cairns. They are all still there for the moment and no breeding will be taking place for a while.
