Rhonda (unsure of spelling), the zoo's Indian rhinoceros, turned 48 today. She is the oldest Indian rhino in captivity. Is she also the oldest rhino regardless of species?

No, superseded by a black rhino in JPN.

Not yet. They indicated that there would be at least one more public meeting at the last one in February. To my knowledge they have not released when that meeting will be. I wouldn't expect to see a master plan until 2018 sometime probably at the earliest.

I wonder where the Asian monitor will be exhibited, and if they will try to replace the female Grey's monitor.

Good to see that revenue is up, since it's usually down. Also good to see that the AZA "commended the zoo for its state-of-the-art elephant exhibit", an endorsement that will surely fall on deaf ears :p

Yes, me too... I find it odd that they only received one. Perhaps there will be more coming shortly?

Didn't seem like sea lions were on display as of this weekend, but they could be clearly (and loudly...) heard from the parking lot

Looks like the aviaries just got a lot more interesting!

The big piece of news: next community meeting for the master plan will be on June 24.

Freckled Duck is an interesting addition, I didn't realise there were any outside Australia.

I hope one of the south central California regulars can go to the meeting (even though it will be live streamed up ...) and give a first hand report afters.

Is it already the Big One ... where they will announce what directions the zoo will take in terms of new exhibits, projects and species plans (or is this still a while off ..)?

I plan on attending the meeting and can certainly give a report (hopefully I'll even get to ask a question or two, something I've struggled to do previously!)

This is just another community meeting; the actual master plan will not be completed for several months probably. I think I remember them saying that they would be doing collection planning after this third meeting. In any case, they will undoubtedly discuss their timeline at this next meeting.

BTW: on the GLAZA meeting reports. There is a tiny yet intriguing account of a recent great ape keeper training workshop in N-E P.R. China for orangs and chimps.

A mysterious comment re. "Discussions Golden Monkeys and Bornean Orangs" ... at the bottom part.

Freckled duck have been in the Columbus Zoo's Roadhouse Aviary for the last year at least and are also held at Sylvan Heights Bird Park; I'm not sure about other US holdings at present. Glad to see the species more represented in US institutions (I'm guessing it's been in private collections and it's definitely present in some German zoos as well).

I'd be so happy if they finally pulled off that golden monkey deal with China. They built that beautiful enclosure and then politics got in the way.
