A black rhino?! I don’t believe the zoo has ever had this species before? Is it moving into the former Indian rhino exhibit?

It says the animal is moving to SDZ Safari Park and is currently at Zoo Miami. LA owns the animal, it is not at the zoo or coming to the zoo.

The zoo had black rhinos for decades. They were still there when I moved to LA in 1997, but left by the early 2000s. Their former exhibit footprint was turned into the new gorilla and orangutan exhibits.

I note the death of one female Hawaiian Short-eared Owl...

A bird which there seemed to be confusion over as to whether it was still at the zoo or not. (Now, definitely not).

As far as I could tell she was simply off-exhibit for the last several years. As such I unfortunately never got to see her...

It would be interesting to follow up if this move has already taken place.

Says the councilman currently bringing politics into the matter. Koretz is an idiot. Wonder if he ever accepted that invitation that Lewis gave to tour the elephant complex?

I guess not, especially for the sake of petty partisanship and keeping the "Free Willy" attitude alive for his voter base (one that ironically killed Willy, AKA Keiko).

But Willy died free! Slowly, painfully, but free and that's all that matters.

This is why zoos should not be connected to local governments. Thankfully my local zoo finally got out from under city parks department earlier this year.

I don' know if this is valid in general. At least here in Western Europe, zoos run by government/public have their advantages imo.
