I'm surprised to hear that you rarely see them, David. I have seen at least one echidna wandering around the back of the koala exhibit almost every time I've been, sometimes two of them. That's where they always are, close to their little doghouses. I also remember at least once in the Australia House an echidna ambling by right next to the walkway.

 

Maybe it is time of day when one visits? One of my favorite sightings was seeing an echidna push around a ball in the koala yard.

Some day I hope that the echidnas get an exhibit at the zoo where you can see them up close. They are wonderful animals, and if people see them most think that they are some kind of porcupine.

 

For your question, yes, they do have an underground burrow system built by themselves.

 

Thanks for that, was unsure as I couldn’t really see which is why I thought they might be so active when I went. Is there anything that stops them from digging out the enclosure?

LA Zoo changes during Boo at the Zoo
-the birds including the Masked Bobwhites, Chukar Partridges, Hill Myna, Speckled Mousebirds, Oriental Magpie-Robin, and Red-whispered Bulbul have been moved off-exhibit to the Avian Conservation Center from the Greater Roadrunner, Bornean Crested Firebacks, and Spur-winged Lapwing exhibits.
-There are now Fledgling Crested Fireback and Con Der Decken’s Hornbills out with the adults.
-Cardinal Tetras removed from tank with Freshwater Angelfish in Rainforest of the America’s might be for introducing them in a new school that are now in quarantine.
-I had a rare chance to see Hope the California Condor and Chinook a Bald Eagle during the Bird Show.
-From the recent Zooview Fall 2019, there are renovations in the Takin Exhibit as a pool is being built for the Takins to wallow in the water especially for the hot summer months.

Very true, just a rather high number if something did go wrong!

 

Changes
Maybe something with the filtration and life support system.
-I heard the Red-tailed Black Cockatoos would be placed in the former East African Grey Crowned Crane exhibit in the roundhouse next to the Binturongs along with Eurasian Eagle Owls (Western Siberian Subspecies) and Bornean Crested Fireback Pheasants.
-the offsprings of the Von Der Decken’s Hornbills, Crested Firebacks, and Red-billed Blue Magpies had been sent to other zoos.
-We still have three Grey-crowned Cranes named after the Powerpuff girls in the world of bird show and they are listed in the Vision Plan, and my guess is that they’ll be placed in savanna multi-species exhibit with Masai Giraffes, Grevy’s Zebras, Ostriches, Antelopes, and Southern White Rhinoceros.

 

That is quite the ambitious mix! I'm interested to see how the zebras in particular will get on with the other species.

The birds are in separate enclosures in the round house by the hippos and black bear exhibits.

That makes me so damn happy! I can’t wait to see the little bundle of joy at my local zoo every chance I can, the expected birth of this baby is an extraordinary event to help diversify the species with their genetics
