The female born on November 10, 2017 is named Kota. "Opey" is the donor name for her mother whose original name is Baraka. Her prior calf, Bomani (now at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois), has a different father (Jamal). Baraka gained her new name sometime between the births of Bomani and Kota as the LA Zoo used different names for her in each press release.

He just celebrated his 30th birthday on February 20. I don't have information on the cause of death.

The Zooscape newsletter for this month highlights the new arrivals like the rainbow fish and hatchetfish. Last month, birds of different species have laid eggs and some of the bird species have produced their first clutch for the first time for their species in the zoo’s collection like the Green Aracari, Yellow-billed Magpie, and the Southern Cassowaries.

Which fringe-limbed treefrogs does LA keep?

So on looking further into this the zoo has chosen a very poor common name for their Cruziohyla sp., which is not at all the same as a fringe-limbed treefrog.

Unless I'm mistaken, they've had a calf every year the last few years, after decades without one?

U know. As much as ppl on here do hate the LA zoo. They do have one of the best chimpanzee exhibits In any US zoo in my opinion. Second only to John Ball Zoos

I do love the chimpanzee exhibit as well as the group dynamics there and I understand some of the gripes some on here have with the zoo. It’s a major city zoo especially being LA would come with some expectation to be amongst the best and rightfully so. But it’s improving slowly, the major additions of Elephants of Asia and The LAIR being a Zoochatter’s galore for some of the best exhibitions for elephants and ectotherms. Hopefully with the new master plan that is to be rolled out over the next 2 decades it would put it amongst the very best :)
