Father is Djanghou, also himself born at Howletts/PL. Was given a group of younger Howletts bred females at the very early age of about nine, but they all matured together and then started breeding. Kisane was still living in the group with his father when I visited a few months ago so has only been seperated quite recently. He will be a socially very well balanced male from this background.
‘Kisane’ the gorilla has successfully been introduced to Mogo’s females. They are now all on display. Mogo Zoo
That’s really good news that they successfully introduced him to all three females, including G-Ann. With Kriba and G-Ann both recently having turned 40, I imagine any breeding attempts will be focussed on eight year old Kipenzi.
Some unexpected news. Featherdale Wildlife Park has bought Mogo Zoo. We’re for Sydney | Daily Telegraph
Can you give a summary of the article? I just get a subscribe page for the link. I'm wondering if this means that Featherdale will close as a site and move all their animals to Mogo, to avoid the competition from Sydney Zoo.
I don’t have full access to the article, only the two minute video at the top of the page. The video shows a keeper from Featherdale Wildlife Park meeting with Mogo Zoo’s owner. The change of ownership will occur this month. The Featherdale keeper mentions that they plan to continue the 30 year legacy of Mogo Zoo and keep it running smoothly. At the end of the video, the owner of Mogo Zoo says the zoo needs, “new things now”. In the video, there was no explicit talk about any new additions or expansion plans.
I had a google around and it doesn't seem like there is an article, just the video which is really superficial and doesn't say anything much at all.
That was my first thought too - I know Featherdale is extremely concerned about the opening of Sydney Zoo which is quite close to them. It would be sad to lose a facility like Featherdale from the Sydney metropolitan area. The private owner of Mogo has been there for a long time and is no doubt looking for an exit strategy - so it was probably a good opportunity for both parties.
I can access the article so will put a few summaries below. The sale is to Featherdale which in turn is owned by a larger investment group known as Eleanor investors who will now own Mogo as well. Chad who is the keeper in the article has been life sciences manager at Featherdale for around 10 years and will now take over as Manager/curator at Mogo. In the article there is mention that Featherdale will introduce a 2 zoo membership to cover both sites which would imply that Featherdale is to remain open for now.
“They will honour my legacy and do it proud” – Sally Padey, Mogo Zoo | About Regional At the end of November, just prior to the zoo’s 30th anniversary on Boxing Day, Sydney’s Featherdale Wildlife Park will take over. ... Negotiations between the two organisations started over 12 months ago, and with Sally approaching her 62nd birthday it was time to pass on the “great responsibility” of looking after Australia’s largest collection of privately owned exotic animals. “I feel that I can now hand the reins over and I feel that they will really do my zoo proud.” In terms of her own future, Sally points to time with her family. ... read more Also a message on Facebook: Security Check Required One of my favourite photos from Mogo - taken in Dec 2003:
It seems like Mogo Zoo has been renamed Mogo Wildlife Park (according to a new Facebook profile picture). Mogo Zoo Their website has also been updated now. Mogo Zoo
Apparently the zoo now has two six-month-old tiger cubs. They are offering visitor encounters with the tiger cubs. Security Check
They look like hybrids. Do you know what adult tigresses they have? As far as I'm aware they only had the Sumatran female, Soroya (born 2002), who is post reproductive. I suppose they could have been imported of course.
Is Malu (born Wellington 1996) still alive ? The cubs are described as being 6 months old. One could potentially be Nelson from Australia Zoo? He's currently 6 months old.. No idea about the second cub though
I’m afraid Malu passed away earlier this year at just over 22 years of age. See Post #258 of this thread: Big/Small Cats in Australasian Zoos – News, History and Discussion
