Female king vulture Toki who is estimated to be 60 years old dies on 31 December last year. Higashiyama was the last JAZA zoo to keep King vultures.

7 year old male antearer Sanpei will move out to an undisclosed overseas zoo. He will be off display on February 1st.

Male Tsushima leopard cat Sago will be sent to Nasu Animal Kingdom. After this transfer the zoo will have three leopard cats left in Higashiyama. NAK already has Amur leopard cats but not of the Tsushima locale.

I guess Sanpei will be moving to Taipei Zoo, Taiwan. I've sent an e-mail to Taipei, they said there will be a male giant anteater coming from Higashiyama.

A male giant anteater called "Sanpei" just arrived at Taipei Zoo from Higashiyama Zoo, this is a breeding loan with Higashiyama Zoo, and cooperation with JAZA.

Okay so here are some news from this year since the arrival of wolves and the departure of Sanpei the anteater.

15 year old 1.0 Goku the tsushima leopard cat has passed from a tumour on his head on October 22 this year. Other losses include the the zoo's last Volcano rabbit* in May 12 at the age of 9, the zoo's last fishing cat Dorio in 22 April at the age of 10, 1.0 sun bear Ma-kun March 13 at the age of 28, and 1.0 aardvark Osamu March 30 at the age of 21.

0.1 Asian elephant was born to mother Anura and father Walder

As of Setember 27 three female koalas were confirmed to have babies

    * I could guess that there will be people here asking if the zoo will try to get Romelagus again. I guess the zoo sort of predicted the same thing so in the obituary post this was posted (translation used using Google translate):

"Since October 5, 2020, the exhibition of the Mexican rabbit has been discontinued, but since this individual died, the breeding at our zoo has ended.
In addition, regarding the new animals, in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the sister city relationship in 2017, we have recommended procedures to introduce them from our sister zoo, Chapultepec Zoo, but the number of animals kept at Chapultepec Zoo has decreased dramatically. Due to the influence of the new coronavirus infection, etc., it has not been realized at the moment.
We will continue to discuss and coordinate animal exchanges between the two zoos, and will let you know when it is decided that the Mexican rabbit will visit the zoo."

A real pitty to hear the Volcano rabbits are doing so poor at both Higashiyama and Chapultepec zoo. Thought always at least the animals at Mexico City were breeding very well but I seem to be wrong :(.

In 2022, Nagoya and Mexico City will celebrate the 45th anniversary of their sister city affiliation, and Nagoya Higashiyama Zoo and Chapultepec Zoo will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their sister zoo affiliation. In this commemorative year, Nagoya City will transfer Humboldt penguins to the zoo and Mexico City will transfer Volcano rabbits to the zoo as a sign of friendship.

On March 3rd 2023 the zoo welcomed young male polar bear Fubuki born at Oga aquarium in Akita prefecture. The zoo's polar bear exhibit had been empty for a while.

Something like this exists in Japan? I know about hipped popularity of otters, manuls and owls in East Asia, but sand cats? Are they present in private hands too?
