Here is the document I've been compiling the data in (please mind the spelling). Feel free to request permission to edit and help out if you want, dont feel obligated to though. Birds - Captive
Here a list for Hunter Valley Zoo, the bird lineup does change a fair bit and this is a list I’ve done from memory so I may have missed some of the smaller species (eg honeyeaters etc) but at 70 species I think my list covers a decent bit of it haha. Taronga Western Plains Zoo only exhibit Emu. They also have off-exhibit breeding programs for Regent Honeyeater and Plains-wanderer.
I never got around to posting a species list for Maleny Bird World on ZooChat but here are the native species I saw during my visit. They were renovating their finch aviary at the time so I'm sure they have more species than what's in the list below: Peaceful Dove Geopelia striata Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus latirostris Red-tailed Black Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus banksii Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus funereus Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo Lophochroa leadbeateri Galah Eolophus roseicapillus Long-billed Corella Cacatua tenuirostris Little Corella Cacatua sanguinea Sulphur-crested Cockatoo Cacatua galerita Cockatiel Nymphicus hollandicus Superb Parrot Polytelis swainsonii Regent Parrot Polytelis anthopeplus Australian King Parrot Alisterus scapularis Crimson-winged Parrot Aprosmictus erythropterus Bourke’s Parrot Neopsephotus bourkii Blue-winged Parrot Neophema chrysostoma Australian Ringneck Barnardius zonarius [both Port Lincoln and Mallee Ringneck] Green Rosella Platycercus caledonicus Crimson Rosella Platycercus elegans [including Adelaide Rosella] Eastern Rosella Platycercus eximus Pale-headed Rosella Platycerus adscitus Red-capped Parrot Purpureicephalus spurius Rainbow Lorikeet Trichoglossus moluccans Red-collared Lorikeet Trichoglossus rubritorquis Satin Bowerbird Ptilonorhynchus violaceus Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata They also had three hybrids during my visit: Galah x Sulphur-crested Cockatoo Eolophus roseicapillus x Cacatua galerita Galah x Little Corella Eolophus roseicapillus x Cacatua sanguinea Rainbow Lorikeet x Scaly-breasted Lorikeet Trichoglossus moluccans x Trichoglossus chlorolepidotus Also, just a note from looking at your document - White-breasted Ground Dove isn't a native species.
Like I mentioned above, the finch aviary was being renovated at the time of my visit so neither of these species would have been in there.
@WhistlingKite24 I thought you had a list of the bird species at the DDZ which have quite a nice collection!
@Yoshistar888 has already listed the majority of the native bird species that DDZ has in his document above. Here is the list from February of this year anyways for interest’s sake: Emu Dromaius novaehollandiae Plumed Whistling Duck Dendrocygna eytoni Wandering Whistling Duck Dendrocygna arcuata Cape Barren Goose Cereopsis novaehollandiae Black Swan Cynus atratus Rajah Shelduck Radjah radjah Hardhead Aythya australis White-headed Pigeon Columba leucomela Pacific Emerald Dove Chalcophaps longiostris Spinifex Pigeon Geophaps plumifera Wonga Pigeon Leucosarcia melanoleuca Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove Ptilinopus regina Topknot Pigeon Lopholaimus antarcticus Australian Bustard Ardeotis australis Purple Swamphen Porphyrio melanotus Bush Stone Curlew Burhinus grallarius Pied Stilt Himantopus leucocephalus Banded Lapwing Vanellus tricolor [signed but not seen] Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles Australian Pelican Pelecanus conspicillatus Nankeen Night Heron Nycticorax caledonicus Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus Royal Spoonbill Platalea regia Barking Owl Ninox connivens Eastern Grass Owl Tyto longimembris Eastern Barn Owl Tyto delicatula Laughing Kookaburra Dacelo novaeguineae Nankeen Kestrel Falco cenchroides Red-tailed Black Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus banksii samuelli Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus funereus Gang-gang Cockatoo Callocephalon fimbriatum Galah Eolophus roseicapillus Long-billed Corella Cacatua tenuirostris Sulphur-crested Cockatoo Cacatua galerita Australian King Parrot Alisterus scapularis Crimson-winged Parrot Aprosmictus erythropterus Bush Budgerigar Melopsittacus undulatus Noisy Pitta Pitta versicolor Regent Bowerbird Ptilonorhynchus chrysocephalus Eastern Whipbird Psophodes olivaceus White-browed Woodswallow Artamus superciliosus
I had listed the species but not DDZ as being a holder for most of them so i'm editing it now. (it takes a loooot of time). EDIT: DDZ is completed now im going to work on territory wildlife park
It's already at 141 species and i've only completed the listings of a few collections. so 19.23% and this is with a handful of zoos... EDIT: now onto some smaller collections, (Melbourne Zoo, Weribee, Dubbo, National zoo, serendip sanctuary.) EDIT 2: now up to 152 species with those smaller collections. EDIT 3: Zoos that I have data on that I have not completed yet. Halls gap, Ballarat, Maleny bird world, Taronga zoo, Moonlit (partialy done it), Phillip Island Wildlife park (partialy done it), Hunter Valley Zoo, Sea World Gold Coast, WILDlife sydney, D'Alguir wildife and Lone Pine Koala sanctuary. Collections completed: Melbourne zoo, Territory wildlife park, Serendip sanctuary, dubbo, Weribee, Birdworld Kuranda, Melbourne Museum, DDZ, Featherdale, National, Australia, Curumbinn, Dreamworld, David Flaey. Data needed. (once ive done my existing data ill get back to researching). most other institutions.
The Territory Wildlife Park signage had them listed as "Pied Imperial Pigeon", however The species name was in small print under the australian distribution map. Unfortunately I didn't take a close up of the individual sign so can't zoom in to see what they had listed as the species name. I will leave it up to the bird experts for a definitive answer - but based on Wikipedia I think you are right in calling these Torresian Imperial Pigeon Ducula spilorrhoa. See my photo below which shows the barring on the underside of the tail feathers.
Note: Listing each holder has been an overwhelming amount of work so for now I’ll just list the species that are found in Australian zoos without detailed amounts of text. The research is still going and the number of species is well into the 200s
This list is great!!! I wish I was able to contribute but I don't visit many zoos however I think I can provide some sort of list for the Ipswich Nature Centre Also does Taronga still have a powerful owl? I remember reading about it being new addition to the bird show but maybe it was just a rehab bird? I'm not sure. But thank you all anyways for all the effort!
