Hello, i have created a blog to talk about the bronx zoo. It will be mainly focused on the size of exhibits using google earth. I hope to expand it to all new york city zoos. My first article is on tiger mountain and part 1 of a 2 part Wild Asia post will be up soon. Please check it out. :)

No we are going to do all differnet zoos right now i am working on the philladlephia zoo and national zoo to be up in october. I also plan to have omaha and san diego up in late october/ early november. I just thought it would be helpful to focus on size because it is one of the main qualities in a exhibit. And i was not trying to brag because i will be talking about zoos across the country. I just decided to start in new york where im from.

I am quite impressed with your blog, and I even voted for Minnesota Zoo in the "best tiger exhibit" poll. How do you figure out the size of the exhibits? Your Wild Asia analysis had acreage numbers for all of the enclosures but how accurate are those numbers? Keep up the great work!

I use google earths polygon tool and to the best of my ability i get the size of the exhibit by converting it on Shapes . I also use the archive maps feature for northern zoos to get a picture during the winter for hevily shaded exhibits such as wild asia and congo which will be up in several weeks. But obviously zoos like san diego safari park and los angeles are easier and more accurate than shaded zoos like Bronx I have finished 6 weeks worth of post but will release 1 or 2 each week.
    definate zoo list:
    -central park zoo
    -bronx zoo
    -philly zoo
    -national zoo
    -san diego zoo
    -san diego safari park
    -dallas zoo
    -omaha zoo
    -woodland park zoo
    -los angeles zoo

Part 2 of the elephant exhibits in north america is up with zoos in oregon, washington, arizona, new mexico and hawaii. Also please vote for which animal should come next after the elephants, either Polar bear, Orangutan and Gorilla this poll will be open for the next week.

It is interesting to note that Honolulu, Wildlife Safari, Woodland Park, Oregon, Point Defiance, Phoenix and Hogle all have elephant exhibits that are 1.1 acres or less in size. At least Oregon is opening a 6-acre new Asian Elephant habitat, but the other zoos have no plans to expand their puny elephant enclosures. How disappointing.

I vote for Lowland Gorilla for the next featured mammal.
