The female Lions where born at Blair Drummond in either 2005 or 2006,as for the Amur Tiger it could well be the oldest in a U.K zoo.

Do you think Blackpool wanted African lions, or were they unable to join the Asiatic lion EEP? I would have expected them to have moved over to Asiatics.

I would presume they would of preferred Asiatic. But from what I gather on another thread Astiatic Lions are in short supply at the moment.

But Lions of any kind are a crowd pleaser so I imagine they took what ever they could get at the time.

This is incorrect, the females arrived were listed as being 11 years old (the eldest) and 8 years old when they arrived at Blackpool Zoo.

When Blackpool had their previous three lions (male was about 12, two girls late teens) in early 2000s, the idea was to replace with Asiatic. However the timing was always going to be difficult if they didn't want to be left with an empty exhibit for a period of time. They were interested in taking Edinburgh's elderly female African (later euthanased) to allow Edinburgh into the Asiatic program.

Has the new male had access to the outside enclosure yet with the females, or is he still in quarantine?

Im pretty sure he is the oldest Amur in the UK,But there are much older Bengal hybrids at Howletts some being about 20? or older.
There are slightly younger cats around Padmini who is 16 at the moment who is a pure bengal at the Wildlife Heritage Foundation and Morris a bengal tiger at West Mids.
I will check on the ages of the Howletts tigers when i visit tomorow.
    Regards

Thought that this was the most appropriate place to post this:

Blackpool's lion cubs have been named Luna, Kimya and Nikita according to Blackpool Zoo's twitter feed.
