Oh yes, I already noticed. Unfortunately, I cannot open the article in my region. However, she probably died in September 2018, because at the beginning of the article I see that she died in September and the article comes from July, so probably think last September.
So now they should have 6 cows (if one has not died, it seems they do not announce it until later).

How many Africans have passed away this year? It seems to be one of the highest losses in the last few years.

Another year has come and gone, and it’s once again time to update the thread with an overview of the transfers, births, and deaths within the North American population of African elephants.

Between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2019, there were six transfers, ten deaths, and one birth within the North American population of African elephants. The population had its ups, with the birth of a bull calf through artificial insemination, and downs, with the death of three invaluable young cows, over the past year. In addition, the transfer of six bulls and two cows enabled six institutions to either establish or re-establish their bachelor herd, enhance or establish their breeding herd, or develop and grow their herd.

    Transfers:

1.0 Macembe and 1.0 Emanti were transferred from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to the Caldwell Zoo on April 5, 2019.

Furthermore, it’s once again time to update the thread with the current population of African elephants in North America. As of January 1, 2020, there are 188 (38.150) African elephants in North America. Currently, 154 (36.118) African elephants reside at 36 accredited institutions while 34 (2.32) African elephants reside at 13 unaccredited institutions.

The following data may have inaccuracies as the status of 18 (0.18) African elephants have not been updated since the last studbook publication. The African elephants with an outdated status are italicized. Any information regarding the status of these African elephants would improve the validity of the data in the thread.

With inspiration from @EsserWarrior, the following link will enable others to view the updated population of African elephants in North America: Current North American African Elephant Population. When a transfer, birth, or death occurs within the population, the document will be updated but the link will only be posted to the thread every three months (January, April, July, and October).

0.1 Litsemba gave birth to a female calf on April 6, 2020, at the Reid Park Zoo. The sire is 1.0 Mabhulane (Reid Park Zoo).

Reid Park Zoo Welcomes New Elephant Calf to the Herd | Reid Park Zoo

I'm so elated that Litsemba had a female calf!!! Reid Park Zoo is definitely heading in the right direction towards growing a matriarchal herd with the new female calf. Having Litsemba as the matriarch, Lungile as the supporting auntie, and Nandi and the new calf as the next generation will certainly enable the Reid Park Zoo to grow a multi-generational herd.

Rhode Island (Roger Williams Park Zoo) isn’t phasing out it’s African Elephants. Interestingly enough, the zoo wants to bring a male elephant in so the zoo can start a breeding program.

That’s interesting. The outdoor habitat is fine but not adequate in my opinion for a herd and bull. The indoor space is real small though. Unless the zoo phases out giraffes and expands the elephants into their space, as well as expanding the female enclosure into the other african exhibits its hard to picture.

Also its current trio are post-reproductive.

I think they would rather remove the crowned cranes and move those birds to the zebra, wildebeest, and watusi cattle exhibit so that their exhibit can be absolved into the elephants. I know there was a rumor floating around that the elephants were going to be replaced by rhinos but that isn’t true. What I kinda want though because the penguins, sea lions, and shorebird aviary is going to take up where the zebra exhibit is, they should remove the elephants, and combine the giraffe and elephant exhibits together to make a mini African plains sort of deal. Put the cranes, zebra, wildebeest, and watusi cattle where the elephants were, and maybe make a smaller exhibit for cheetahs, and the cheetah exhibit should house lions

Putting cranes, marabous into an open range savannah exhibit is the death knell from an animal welfare perspective of these iconic bird species. They have been demonstrated to not do well in any of that. Birds require restive areas and seclusion to thrive and breed, and thus exhibits separate from any of a themed safari park experience (complete with the PR mumbo jumbo).

BTW: This has been known for decades in bird husbandry and it is sad to see so a good number of conventional zoos continuing to make that animal welfare mistake. I feel often this is brought on by those parts in the organisation that are not in line with current bird husbandry techniques and baseline criteria and - perhaps - lesser concern for and only looking at visitor services, the "experience" mumbo jumbo and PR and marketing at the heart.

Back on top after this diversionary observation: How big is Roger Williams Park Zoo and is there additional land available for expansion (around the zoo ... towards the lower end or is that designated greenfields / parkland)? I guess not, but ...

Incidentally, on their website the elephant plans are not indicated in the 20 years masterplanning designs up.

The zoo is 40 acres. I’ve gotten insider information that what they were planning to do is where the tiger exhibit is, they would make the land beside that as either another adjacent exhibit that’s part of the zoo or just another parking lot. They can’t damage the wild pond because it’s a protected site.

Also I know that the elephants weren’t mentioned in the Master Plan. I was in the youth advisory council for a little bit and I asked about a rumor if the elephants were gonna be replaced and that’s the answer they gave me.
