It was announced on the Albuquerque BioPark Zoos Facebook that Jasmine died last night from EEHV. This is a devastating blow to the North American Asian Elephant Population. Her mother Rosanna now has no surviving offspring. What a horrible way to begin 2022 in the North American Asian Elephant Population

Second ABQ BioPark elephant dies from virus

It pains me that ABQ was so close to having a herd consisting of four generations and having two calves around the same time but ended up losing Jazzy. I was very confident that ABQ would AI Jazmine soon and she and Rozanna would have calves together in a few years like Tess and Tupelo did at Houston. Even if Rozie's next calf is female it will still be (at least) another 10 years till she becomes a grandma and who knows if Alice will still be alive by then.

I hope Rozanna and her keepers are coping well with the terrible losses of two precious calves and hopefully both Jazzy and Thorn rest in peace.

    :(:(

Horrible news. I believed that at least Jazmine would survive due to his older age and therefore stronger body. Unfortunately, this did not happen. It's very sad. RIP Jazmine. :(:(:(

but she was 8. That’s usually when they’re vulnerable to succumbing to EEHV is ages between 18 months - 8 years old.

Of course I know, but it can still be assumed that an eight-year-old elephant is a little stronger than a three-year-old calf. Unfortunately, the virus doesn't seem to care.

I wasn’t saying you didn’t know. All I said was she was still in that vulnerable age category where they usually succumb to the virus is all. And sadly I agree EEHV doesn’t seem to care and seems to be getting progressively worse.

I know you didn't say anything like that, I guess it sounded offensive, I'm not quite good at English. :D

Does anybody know which of the elephants in the US population are subspecific, and of which subspecies? I know most of the wild-born elephants are subspecific, but I'm not sure which subspecies they are, besides the Buttonwood elephants which are Indian Elephants.

One (Chendra at Oregon) is a Borneo Pygmy and there are no Sumatrans. The majority of the population is of the Indian subspecies with a few Sri Lankans in there but the pure Sri Lankan population is small and decreasing as the entire Asian elephant population is not managed at the subspecific level.

Is the majority Indian Elephants or are the majority generics? I'm not doubting you, just double checking.

There are a good amount of pure Indians left in the population (with pure Indian calves still being born) and the generic population is probably around the same size, maybe even smaller.

There seems to some speculation on the forms that Sunny and Rudy at Columbus are pregnant but I can confirm that they are not. Beco and them have not shown mating behaviors and a new bull may be brought in the future.

Re: subspecies, the effective breeding population for Sri Lankan’s is two animals, a 32 year old cow and her 21 year old nephew. There are around 8-10 other pure Sri Lankan’s, but they are all older non reproductive cows at a minimum of 45 years old.

There are also a handful of pure Malaysian Elephants, including Sabu and Jati at Cincinnati, and Billy at LA.
