Here is a list of all the Eastern Black Rhinos in North America, there may be some in private hands that are not listed here though. There is a total of 57 (30.27) known Eastern Black Rhinos in North America in 25 different facilities, and one known pregnancy (Andazi in Little Rock). The North American Population has had a good year since 3 calves have been born so far (at Lee Richardson, Miami, and Sedgwick). However, all of these calves have been male and most of the calves born in NA lately have been male which is not ideal. Also, please let me know if I am missing any zoos or rhinos!

Thanks for the informative and impressive list!

Now I’m not saying my maths are impressive, but there seems to be a slight descrepancy between the numbers here :)

Kansas holds the old Portland breeding pair on temp laan. The original pair has medicatie issues with vitiligoI believe.

Lol, you are right , I'm sorry about that. That would mean there are actually 59 (31.28) Eastern Black rhinos in North America.

I hate it that on the mobile your automated think tank changes your words in English as you type to my native language and it all comes up gibberish.

For the record: the original Kansas City Zoo pair Werikhe/Imara both have vitiligo and have been taken off the breeding program.

The ex-Portland (Oregon Zoo) pair Ruka/Zuri were supposed to be on a temporary loan basis. Not sure what is happening 2021 going forward. BTW: their Oregon Zoo exhibit has now been completely renovated. What might happen is anybody's guess ...

I'm a huge fan of this list. I was actually considered doing Eastern Black Rhinos and Indian Rhinos myself. Great work!

I found out that 1.0 Juba lives at Africam Safari, his parents are Kibibi (Spike x Inge) and Jimma (Cornelius x Judy). He comes from a well represented family on both sides, so I guess that's why he was sent to Mexico and doesn't have a female companion there.

With this addition there are 32.28 (60) known Eastern Black rhinos living in North America.

Oh right that's interesting to know thanks for sharing !

I think that the male Malayan tapir they have is probably similarly a surplus animal from a US zoo.

As reported by @StoppableSan on the Oregon thread, King has moved from Brookfield to Oregon. Bit of an interesting move since I was expecting Oregon's original pair Ruka and Zuri, who are currently at Kansas City, to return. Anyways, hopefully King was able to get Layla pregnant prior to his departure and is joined by another female at Oregon soon!

Layla has had some health issues that have made breeding difficult, I believe at this time, they are going to pair her with Nakili or even attempt artificial insemination. King will soon be paired with a female, not sure when. Ruka and Zuri are to be the new breeding pair in Kansas City. As mentioned above, Kansas City's other rhinos, Imara and Werikhe, have/carry vitiligo and are excluded from breeding.

That would be cool if they are successful in producing a calf via AI since afaik there has not been a black rhino born from AI (atleast in the US). It shouldn't be too dificult since several zoos have now perfected the skill of AI with GOHR and SDZSP has managed to do so with SWR as well.

According to this article, "A female rhinoceros is expected to join King at Rhino Ridge later this fall." My guess is Jozi from Milwaukee, she is not related to King afaik, is of prime breeding age, and I saw on the Milwaukee thread that they are planning on renovating her habitat and will be sending her away. If not her, full sister Kesi is the next best candidate since she is the only other unpaired young female that's unrelated to King. Her move would also allow their parents Jomo and Azizi to breed again.

I really hope Ruka and Zuri have a calf soon, they have been together for years both at Oregon and Kansas City and still haven't bred. However, they are both pretty young so let's keep our fingers crossed!

Hopefully we will see calves down the line from these two. But this is the first that I've have heard klipspringer being mixed in with rhino

Hopefully! It will take several years though as both are very young, especially Jaali. Me too, it will be very interesting to see the two species among others mixed together.

Actually, to be fair, King and Jozi are quite related to each other. They have Cornelius (born 1979) in common: he's both Jozi's grandfather and King's great grandfather. Obviously, not a very strict correlation, anyway.

Oh you’re right, just realized that. There are not very many individuals that are unrelated to Cornelius (and Elly) in the population though, related breeding pairs were becoming inevitable.
