    Every couple of years the excellent Oregon Coast Aquarium features a brand-new temporary exhibit, and this year's gallery is called "Sea & Me" and opens on May 26th. It will be a children's interactive exhibit specifically for kids between the ages of 4-10, and will include a touch tank with sharks and rays.

    The aquarium will temporarily receive 19 puffins and 5 Common Murres from the Point Defiance Zoo while the zoo improves their enclosure.

    The aquarium has a new exhibit that just opened this month. There are no live animals, but Cruisin' the Fossil Coastline looks cool for those individuals who like prehistoric creatures. Some more information, and a half-dozen photos, can be found on the link below:

    Also, the aquarium received $5 million this month, via a state lottery bond, and that money will go towards some modifications to the three indoor galleries. Here's a link with several images of proposed alterations to the existing galleries:

    On January 20th, the aquarium announced that a (0.1) brown pelican named Jojo passed away.

    On February 14th, the aquarium announced they acquired a (1.0) California sea lion named Nemo from Animal Training and Research International Center in California.

    On March 1st, the aquarium announced they will start Phase 2 of the construction projects later in 2022, including a new gallery for various jellyfish species.

    On March 21st, the aquarium announced that (0.0.2+) California bat rays were born.

    On March 22nd, the aquarium announced that they started construction on the new Outdoor Amphitheater and Headwaters Feature as well as renovations to the Nature Play Area and main lobby.

    On April 27th, the aquarium announced they released a (1.0) giant Pacific octopus named Impasta back into the wild after being on display at the facility for 14 months.

    On April 29th, the aquarium announced they have acquired a (0.1) giant Pacific octopus named Pepper.

    On May 6th, the aquarium announced that due to avian influenza, they have closed the sea bird aviary to the public until further notice.

    On June 1st, the aquarium announced that a (0.1) harbor seal named Skinny turned 47 years old, making her the oldest of her kind in an AZA facility.

    On June 22nd, the aquarium announced that Phase 1 (outdoor amphitheater, Nature Play Area, headwaters feature, renovated lobby) finished construction and is now open to the public.

    On June 30th, it was announced that the aquarium received $117,987 from the US Fish and Wildlife and the AZA for the care of endangered species.

    On July 21st, the aquarium announced that a (0.0.1) common murre hatched on July 16th and was given the name Poutine. On July 28th, the aquarium announced that another (0.0.1) common murre hatched and was given the name Gouda.

    On August 16th, the aquarium announced that (0.0.2) tufted puffins named Boba and Gezpacho hatched recently.

    On August 29th, the aquarium announced more of the plans in Phase 2 including an expanded touch tank in the Sandy Shores gallery, a new mangrove exhibit in the Coastal Waters exhibit as well as the previously mentioned jellyfish gallery. Construction was to start on September 6th, but was delayed to further in the autumn season. Construction will finish by spring 2023.

    *Misc news: In January, the aquarium rehabilitated a (0.0.1) Nasca booby and later transferred it to International Bird Rescue in California. They also sent (0.0.7) sea turtles to The Marine Mammal Center in California for research purposes in late March. On May 23rd, the aquarium announced they turned 30 years old.

    Oof. Even as a five-year-old otter on my 2018 visit, I was impressed by how laid back this guy was. Saintly, compared to the overgrown toddlers in Vancouver at the time.

    On July 25th, the aquarium announced that a (0.0.1) tufted puffin hatched which was later named Inigo Montoya.

    On July 27th, the aquarium announced that a (1.0) harbor seal named Boots passed away at age 35 due to throat cancer.

    On August 3rd, the aquarium announced it transferred a (1.0) green moray eel named Banner to the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium in Missouri.

    On September 5th, the aquarium announced that they started major renovations to the Sandy Shores and Rocky Shores galleries, which will be closed until summer 2024. Coastal Waters will still be open until a later date, in which the gallery will be completely reimagined as Connected Coasts. Changes include a new jellyfish gallery (which will include species such as moon jelly, blue blabber jellyfish, etc.), a new mangrove exhibit (which will be located in Connected Coasts), a remodeled touch tank exhibit (located in Sandy Shores), updated signage in both English and Spanish, and improved traffic flow.

    On December 15th, the aquarium announced they received a $100,000 grant from Travel Oregon which will benefit the touch pool exhibit in the Rocky Shores gallery, which will reopen in mid-2024.
