I hope that anyone going to the Oregon Zoo soon will find this list helpful. :)

This is very helpful as this is a zoo I plan on visiting when all the renovations are through. Thanks for the list!

Excellent post, although I’m fairly certain this is meant to be in the USA forums. Perhaps a mod could move it?

That might be a good choice, though I'm not sure how to fix that.

I have moved this to the USA forums for you. In future, you can notify the Mods of an issue by using the 'Report' function, found at the bottom right of each post.

Thank you for doing that, and I will use the technique if I make this mistake again.

Wow, this is awesome! Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the Oregon Zoo transferred their Hippos and Polar Bears to other zoos.

    Based on the following sources:
Last call for hippos: Poppy and Bubbles move to Texas | Oregon Zoo
Polar bear Nora to get new home, new companion this fall | Oregon Zoo

The Oregon Zoo transferred their hippos Mukenko and Kiboko to the Fort Worth Zoo to make room for the construction of the new black rhino habitat. In addition, the Oregon Zoo transferred their polar bear Nora to the Hogle Zoo to begin construction on the new polar bear habitat.

That is correct, they did transfer the Hippos and Polar Bears to those zoos.

Apparently, one elephant is a Bornean, no idea about the others, I've heard different things from different sources.

Based on the following source: Asian elephants | WWF, there are four recognized subspecies of Asian elephant.

    Indian:
Elephants that inhabit Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Malay Peninsula, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam.

    Sri Lankan:
    Elephants that inhabit Sri Lanka

    Sumatran:
    Elephants that inhabit Sumatra

    Bornean:
    Elephants that inhabit Borneo

Based on the information above and the following source: 2014 North American Regional Studbook - Asian Elephant, these are the subspecies from which the Oregon Zoo’s elephants originate from:

    0.1 Chendra 1993-00-00 (Bornean)
Chendra is from the Bornean subspecies as she was born in Sabah, Malaysia.

0.1 Sung Surin (Packy x Pet) 1982-12-26 (Indian)
Sung Surin is from the Indian subspecies as her descendents originated from Thailand and Cambodia.

0.1 Rose Tu (Hugo x Me Tu) 1994-08-31 (Indian)
Rose Tu is from the Indian subspecies as her descendents originated from Thailand and Cambodia. Unfortunately, the origins of her father Hugo are unknown but the possibility of him originating from the Indian subspecies is high.

1.0 Samson (Calvin x Kitty) 1998-05-04 (Indian / Sri Lankan)
Samson is from the Indian and Sri Lankan subspecies as his mother originated from Thailand while the parents of his father originated from Sri Lanka.

1.0 Samudra (Tusko x Rose Tu) 2008-08-23 (Indian)
Samudra is from the Indian subspecies as his descendents originated from Thailand and Cambodia.

0.1 Lily (Tusko x Rose Tu) 2012-11-30 (Indian)
Lily is from the Indian subspecies as her descendents originated from Thailand and Cambodia.

Somewhat miffed that subspecies are not kept with their own: in particular the island ssp. like the Bornean. It would be nice to have a WAZA program for Bornean and / or Sumatran - both highly endangered -.

I thought western painted and western pond turtles are the same species.

Maybe in the future, instead of 5 continuous posts of different facts, maybe one post with all the questions/information would be nice.

From a global standpoint that would be nice, but I don't think Asian elephant reproduction is successful enough over here to maintain a pure subspecies unless the vast majority are already of one - and if they are, it'll be Indian, the least threatened.
