PAIGNTON'S MAMMALS I've compiled a current list of the zoo's on show (as far as I know) mammals. It might be interesting to watch developments in the coming months, in view of the TB situation. Some are defined as 'unsexed' because I haven't been able to say one way or another. They are listed in a completely unscientific way! Baboon, Hamadryas lots Bongo, Eastern 0.2 Camel, Bactrian 0.2 Capybara 1.0 Cheetah 1.1 Coati, ring-tailed 4.0 Cusimanse, common 0.0.2 Echidna, short-beaked 1.0 Elephant, African 0.1 Gibbon, grey 0.1 Gibbon, lar 2.0 Gibbon, pileated 2.1 Giraffe, Rothschild's 0.6 Goat, domestic 2.0 Goat, pygmy 4.0 Gorilla, Western lowland 4.0 Hog, red river 0.2 Kangaroo, Western grey 0.0.? (not visible on my visit) Lemur, red-fronted 1.1 Lemur, red-ruffed 1.1 Lemur, ring-tailed 9.0 Lion, Asiatic 2.1 Macaque, Sulawesi crested 8.2 Mandrill 2.6 Mangabey, cherry-crowned 2.2 Marmoset, pygmy 0.0.5 Monkey, Diana 1.2 Monkey, Goeldi's 0.0.1 Monkey, howler 2.2 Monkey, white-faced saki 1.0 Monkey, brown spider 1.3 Monkey, squirrel 2.0 Monkey, swamp 0.1 Orangutan, Bornean 1.5 Peccary, collared 0.6 Pig, pot-bellied 0.1 Red panda 1.1 Rhino, black 1.1 Sheep, Barbary 0.1 Sheep, Ouessant 6.2 Sheep, Soay 0.0.3 Slow loris, pygmy 1.1 Takin, mishmi 2.0 Tamarin, cotton-topped 0.0.3 Tamarin, emperor 0.0.3 Tamarin, golden lion 0.1 Tamarin, pied 3.0 Tapir, Brazilian 1.1 Tiger, Sumatran 2.1 Tur, West Caucasian 2.5 Wolf, maned 2.3 Zebra, Hartmann's mountain 1.1
63 Baboons according to the keeper the other day (which included the 3 days old baby at the time). There were at least 4 Kangaroo's the other day, no idea what sex though. Also there is only one Red Panda, the female has died.
Thanks. I was going to put >4 for the kangaroos but decided not to as there was no sign of them yesterday. I did assume there were still two red pandas. Never assume! The lions are father, son and daughter.
Only 2 cusimanse? A bloody shame! Thanks for taking the time out for making this (very depressing) list.
I've just realised that I omitted the king colobus. So additions/amendments so far are: Baboon, Hamadryas 0.0.63 Kangaroo, Western grey 0.0.4+ King colobus 2.2 Red panda 1.0
Rajang21 has kindly pointed out that I omitted the Meerkats and that there's a Hazel dormouse on show. So, additions are: Dormouse, hazel 0.1 Meerkat, slender-tailed 0.0.9
The dormouse is in a small enclosure outside the Monkey Heights kitchen, on the elevated viewing area that looks over the mangabey enclosure. Obviously it's very rarely visible.
Gigit - any update on Kangaroo numbers? Also, the food whiteboard in the mammal food prep area still has tree shrew on it?
I haven't managed to get as far as the Kangaroos this week and last week the gate to their enclosure was locked. I only counted the on show mammals - it looks as though the tree shrews could be hidden away somewhere then.
Update: Following their birth a couple of weeks ago (and hoping I'm not tempting fate) Lemur, red-ruffed 1.1.2
With the TB crisis possibly over, here's an updated list: Baboon, Hamadryas 63 Bongo, Eastern 0.2 Camel, Bactrian 0.2 Capybara 1.0 Cheetah 1.1 Coati, ring-tailed 4.0 Colobus, king 2.2 Cusimanse, common 0.0.2 Dormouse, hazel 0.1 Echidna, short-beaked 1.0 Elephant, African 0.1 Gibbon, grey 0.1 Gibbon, lar 2.0 Gibbon, pileated 2.2 Giraffe, Rothschild's 0.6 Goat, domestic 1.0 Goat, pygmy 4.0 Gorilla, Western lowland 4.0 Hedgehog tenrec, lesser 0.0.3 Hog, red river 0.2 Kangaroo, Western grey 0.0.7 Lemur, red-fronted 1.1 Lemur, red-ruffed 1.1.2 Lemur, ring-tailed 9.0 Lion, Asiatic 2.1 Macaque, Sulawesi crested 8.2 Mandrill 2.5 Mangabey, cherry-crowned 2.2 Marmoset, pygmy 0.0.5 Meerkat, slender-tailed 0.0.9 Monkey, Diana 1.2 Monkey, Goeldi's 0.0.1 Monkey, howler 2.2 Monkey, white-faced saki 1.0 Monkey, brown spider 1.3 Monkey, squirrel 2.0 Monkey, swamp 0.1 Orangutan, Bornean 1.5 Peccary, collared 0.6 Pig, pot-bellied 0.1 Red panda 1.1 Rhino, black 1.1 Sheep, Ouessant 6.2 Sheep, Soay 0.0.3 Slow loris, pygmy 1.1 Takin, mishmi 2.0 Tamarin, cotton-topped 0.0.3 Tamarin, emperor 0.0.3 Tamarin, golden lion 0.1 Tamarin, pied 3.0 Tapir, Brazilian 1.1 Tiger, Sumatran 2.1 Wolf, maned 2.3 Zebra, Hartmann's mountain 1.1
There has been no announcement from the zoo, but I've noticed that Richard, the last White-faced saki monkey hasn't been around for a few weeks and today his sign had gone. Also, only one Bongo has been on show for a while. So, as my list concerns mammals on show: Bongo, Eastern 0.1 Saki, white-faced 0.0
Allen's swamp monkey: Not only is there no sign of Swoozie, but there is no sign on her empty and closed house. I fear the end of an era Monkey, Allen's swamp 0.0
