Edinburgh's Polar Bear will shortly be moving to the Highland Wildlife Park

If you have a quick browse of the Edinburgh or Highland Wildlife Park sub-forums, then it is discussed in more detail in there

Hello greyone welcome to the forum

Edinburgh zoo still has one fairly elderly polar bear called Mercedes, who is due to move to the highland wildlife park in a few months time.
There is one other polar bear kept in the Uk, but this is in a private zoo in Oxfordshire.

Edinburgh zoo has a lot of rare animals in its collection, the stand out species for me are

    koala
    aye aye
    gelada baboon
    drill
    purple faced langur
    giant anteater
    wolverine
ratel (due to be moved to another zoo)
    European otter
    Pallas cat
    Amur leopard
    Sumatran tiger
    Asian lion
    Indian rhino
    Malayan tapir
    vicuna
    Siberian musk deer
    white lipped deer
    Bawean deer
    lesser kudu
    Kirk's dik dik
    nyala

    Australian cassowary
    Darwin's rhea
    white naped crane
    blue crane
    Steller's sea eagle
    lady Ross touraco
    Victoria crowned pigeon
    Socorro dove.

And of course the world famous group of penguins.

I hope that answers a little of your question, and again welcome to the site

I think the number for the whole flock would be nearer 150 including the rockhoppers and the kings

    Current ISIS listings:

    Gentoo: 61.74.26
Rockhopper (ssp moseleyi, which ISIS now seems to have as a full species): 12.6.2
    King: 8.2

Which I make to be 191 penguins.

They were the first to breed king and gentoo penguins. They have the largest outdoor enclosure in Europe and they are famous for the daily penguin parade which has been going on since the 1950's.

I did hear that in the short term, it will be used for the pair of European otter, but now that the macaques have reclaimed their rock, where are the otters held now?

I can see this enclosure being netted over and being used for the zoos pair of jaguar, it sits ideally close to the magic forest and living links creating a mini south American area or trail.
But this is just my opinion, not based on anything except my vivid imagination!
