Hello ! I have a question about Prague Zoo ! Seeing videos on youtube, I understood that the squirrel monkeys had a new island near the Gavials House. Still on youtube, I think I see white-belted black-and-white ruffed lemur instead on their old island. But ! In Zoo map (Prague Zoo map), we see that the squirrel monkeys are replaced by tamarins (emperor ?). Can someone tell me more ? Thanks !
On my visits in august, i did not see any squirrel monkeys myself, i went two days and didnt see them in both days, also didnt see signage but there is a big possibility that i just missed the signage if it was there. Idk if this will help much cuz this is months ago but just figured to mention
Emperor tamarins indeed spend some time on the island, but they were more or less a placeholder and didn't really work well there (they pretty much refused to go outside)...
If tamarins go, are squirrel monkeys supposed to return? Either way, there is one empty exhibit - are there some plans?
Squirrel monkeys are staying where they are and as @Gavial said, tamarins were replaced by the lemurs
A pair of collared trogons has come from Chester zoo last month. A pair of Booted eagle arrived from Liberec zoo. A group of 1,3 Urartian rat snake (Elaphe urartica) was obtained from private breeder. 2 brown roofed turtles and one black-breasted leaf turtle hatched in October.
Great news about the turtle-breeding ! And even greater news about the newly recieved Urartian rat snakes - a species only discribed last year !
According to the zoo director, the baby is invaluable from a genetical perspective as it is the only great-grandchild of an orangutan imported to the zoo from forests in Sumatra. He said the baby orangutan might be the most precious of its kind in Europe. Prague Zoo welcomes baby orangutan
November babies/arrivals: Two Annam leaf turtles hatched. A Lesser savanna dormouse (Graphiurus parvus) born. A litter of two Chacoan maras born. A Cuban hutia born. One Malayan peacock-pheasant chick hatched. One Ground cuscus born. One Pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) born, already number 4 in this year. One Pesquet's parrot chick hatched. Probably a first for Czech zoos (but this species is also bred by several local private breeders). Female Swift parrot arrived from Brno zoo. Female Cabot's tragopan and 3 red-breasted mergansers came from private hands. A pair of blacksmith lapwings arrived from Plzeň zoo. A handicaped European honey buzzard arrived from a wildlife rescue station nearby.
Great list of Christmas gifts ! Would love to see such one in France I think you're right even outside Czech Republic. In France, Beauval had them for several years now and never breed them (but had lost at least three parrots). I hope that the breeding of this fantastic species can develop in the future.
That chick is young and we will see if it survives. But it is sure a ray of hope for a better future. When the zoo aquired its stock from local bird breeder Mr. Drozdek, who himself reared many chicks of this species, I´m sure also his accumulated knowledge was adopted and influenced the care and breeding protocols. Fingers crossed for more.
Prague showed their Raggiana bird of paradise on their social media for the first time. They currently hold 2,0 from San Diego, females should arrive from Bronx and San Diego but Covid is complicating it. They live in off-show building designed just for them, but in future some (possibly offspring of breeding pair) should live in the Parrot house
