Those who want first look at the lion cubs can sign up for a special preview breakfast on February 27, 2014. Cost is $50 and includes a South African themed breakfast plus a talk about the cubs from their head keeper and the zoo veterinarian.

As for when the public gets to see them, the website now says early March. (Before now it had said late February).

A South African themed breakfast? It's not South African if there's no roasted chicken. At least, that's what I was told.

Sounds like a great fundraiser nonetheless.

Facebook says watch their page this week for an announcement about the lion cub debut date. We know the sneak preview breakfast is this Thursday (Feb 27), so the public debut should be soon thereafter.

(I am hoping by Saturday when I lead a Photo Safari, but I will just have to wait and see...)

    Updates February 27, 2014.

Elephants have been mostly off exhibit for the last couple weeks while renovation work is done on a transfer gate in their yard.

After today's special sneak preview breakfast for lion cubs, they will be on public exhibit starting tomorrow (Friday Feb 28). Mom and cubs will have access from 9am-12noon daily. I believe they will still have access to the night house, so they may be either inside (off exhibit) or outside (on exhibit) at any given time.

Friday, February 28. Lion mom and cubs did not make it out on exhibit as hoped. One of the cubs seems to be ill (web says something about intestinal issues), so they are being monitored off exhibit.

Not sure when they will be able to go out - I assume it is something the staff just has to check on a day-to-day basis.

Male spot-necked otter has arrived from Tulsa Zoo and is in quarantine.

Lion cubs and mom got a brief session outside yesterday (March 3) and about an hour this afternoon (March 4). See photos from today in the gallery.

Summer 2014 Friday night openings will be May 23 thru July 11.

Has anyone been watching the elephant webcams (both) during the evening hours? It's a riot! They play their usual trunk wrestling games, but chase each other all over the exhibit at high speed. The dust flies as they run into each other. It's like a demolition derby for elephants. ;)
