Asian Elephant Preserve Archives – Syracuse Zoo Events

Construction begins for expanded elephant preserve and new walkway at Rosamond Gifford Zoo

It appears the zoo has started construction on an expansion to the Asian elephant exhibit. It lists this as an expansion from 4.5 to 6 acres, as well as including new walkways and viewing areas for the red wolf and white-lipped deer.

I don't entirely understand where this expansion will be, yet past plans had the zoo reducing the size of the multiacre white-lipped deer exhibit in favor of an elephant expansion. Also the 4.5 statistic is the total area of the exhibit, not the area available to the elephants (which is more like 2.2 acres of outdoor space and an 11,000 sq ft barn).

It was announced via Twitter that Mali, one of the zoo's female elephants, gave birth to a male calf on January 15.

A very nice addition to the zoo! This is calf #3 for Mali, and all three have been male, no doubt the zoo was hoping for a cow calf, but nonetheless this is good news.

Here's hoping Karina will bring in calf #2 for the zoo in 2019 soon enough! (disclaimer, I have no evidence to prove she is pregnant, just hoping)

This is PHENOMENAL news!!!! Congratulations to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo for another successful birth. I sincerely hope that Twenty-three 0.1 Kirina is also pregnant and expecting in 2019.

Apparently, IDA suggested its followers to vote to name the new elephant calf "Prisoner" to emphasize the "cruelty" in the zoo's breeding program.

They sound like a broken record at this point. They are that brazen and that ignorant of the good Zoos do. They know not what they say, only speaking in a hive-minded manner. With that said, I'm not sure if the Zoo has put up a contest for what his name should be, but I'd suggest Thong Trii, (meaning not of small mind in Vietnamese) or Huy San'h (Bright, also in Vietnamese).

It has, but not of those are candidates, instead being:

    Ajay (Uh-JAY) -- "Invincible"

Anurak (Ah-NEW-rak) -- Male angel in Thai mythology

    Chakrii (JAK-gree) -- "King"

    Luk Chai (Look-CHAI) -- "Son"

    Rune (Roo-NEE) -- "Happy"

I would choose Rune for the elephant.

The Elephant Calf has been named Ajay.

Great choice of name, in my opinion, best one on the list.

Though nothing official yet, on a visit to the Zoo Thursday it appears they are renovating the Swan Exhibit across from the Penguins and Cranes into a new Red River Hog exhibit. They had a sign on the work fence and people were doing work on it. No idea when it may open, but it feels like another piece of the zoos master plan they released a couple years ago.
