The zoo is finally going to reopen on June 15, with some safety protocols in place. Let's just hope health officials don't rescind the go ahead again (I doubt it'll happen twice though). Plan Your Zoo Visit | Sacramento Zoo - Sacramento, CA
Zoos, aquariums, and museums were given permission to open June 12 by the state. So we should see most of the facilities starting to reopen.
I know Sacramento Zoo has a breeding recommendation for the orangutans. Has the magic just not happened yet, or is that project on hold?
Heinie, a southern mealy amazon, passed away back in April. Hawk-headed parrots Bert and Dera moved into her former aviary (they were originally on display over by the giraffes). No word on what will happen to their previous habitat (IMO it should be torn down due to its small size). Parrot Updates | Sacramento Zoo - Sacramento, CA
Amaya the red panda is pregnant again! Note the fact the Twitter post says cubs suggesting she has multiple babies on the way. https://twitter.com/SacramentoZoo/status/1272934399034695690 The Fiji Island banded iguana profile has been removed from the zoo's website, leading me to believe the zoo's animal either passed away or was sent to another zoo.
Two Nepalese red panda cubs were born June 24 (one has survived): Endangered Red Panda Cub Born | Sacramento Zoo - Sacramento, CA
The zoo has put three male common squirrel monkeys on display. Their names are Blaze, Taco, and Arlo. Blaze is from the Bronx Zoo and Taco and Arlo are from the Brookfield Zoo. The zoo hopes to bring in more monkeys to create a large bachelor troop. (Login • Instagram)
As the zoo welcomed one South American mammal it appears to of quietly said goodbye to another. The Linnaeus's two-toed sloth has been removed from both the zoo's website and map. As I've said before, while the zoo usually takes a while to add new species profiles to the website, they're usually pretty good about removing them once something happens (i.e. they pass or are sent to another facility). The zoo's species count currently stands at 118. (Sacramento Zoo Species and Name List) On a slightly less upsetting note, here is an article the zoo released a little over a month ago for National Zookeeper Week: Celebrating our Zookeepers | Sacramento Zoo - Sacramento, CA.
The zoo's wolf guenon family has grown by one. The new baby does not have a name and its gender has not been revealed. (Let's just hope when they do announce it they stay away from those gender reveal smoke bombs, amirite my fellow Californians? ) (https://twitter.com/SacramentoZoo/status/1304449716214804480)
My good friend @Daniel_Francois_Langur visited the Sacramento Zoo today and he gave me two unfortunate pieces of information to share with you all: Edwina the sloth indeed has passed away, from old age. She was about 28 years old. Her exhibit is still home to Aurora (F) and Link (M) the white-faced sakis. (Fun Fact: Aurora is nearly 32 years old, making her the oldest female of her species in captivity.) Obi the red kangaroo also passed away from old age. At about 18 years old he was the oldest of the 4 roos at the Sac Zoo. His exhibit is still home to 3 red kangaroos (Brody, Flux, and Jordan (all males)), 2 mainland emus (Shirely (F) and Smee (M)), and 2 southern yellow-footed rock-wallabies (Audrey and Dell (both females)). The zoo's species count currently stands at 118. (Sacramento Zoo Species and Name List)
The Sacramento Zoo is doing a virtual silent auction September 22 to 29. To quote the zoo, "You can register to bid today and preview the 15 amazing packages being offered." (Auction 2020 - Sacramento Zoo)
Shani the Masai giraffe has had a calf! Its sex will be revealed tomorrow. (https://twitter.com/SacramentoZoo/status/1308162565466238976)
It's a girl! Naming Shani's calf is a "tall order" as the zoo puts it and apparently it's going to be one of the prizes you can bid on in the zoo's virtual auction which starts today. (https://twitter.com/SacramentoZoo/status/1308444345083731968)
The male baby wolf's guneon has been named Vinnie. (https://twitter.com/SacramentoZoo/status/1318945260073029633)
