Out of curiosity, how common are freshwater and saltwater crocodiles in zoos outside of Australia? I know Reptile Gardens in South Dakota has a saltwater crocodile, but I'm curious if any other zoos outside of Australia have these species.

Here's what I have for America:
    Saltwater crocodile-
    Albuquerque BioPark
    Clyde Peeling's Reptiland
    Fort Worth Zoo
    Gladys Porter Zoo
    South Carolina Aquarium
St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park (which is breeding them)
    Toledo Zoo
    Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium

I believe the Indian River Reptile Zoo in Canada also keeps saltwater crocs.

    Freshwater crocodile-
    National Aquarium in Baltimore
    Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo
St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park

Many roadside zoos are likely to have either species as well.

Keep in mind that the saltwater crocodile has a huge range from the south-west Pacific to India. Many, if not most, zoos in the range would hold it.

    • I think alligator adventure or gatorland has saltwater. I remember the giant saltie at Toledo. It is really cool and in a great exhibit.

They were sent "to a facility in Florida" but the only one I could think of was St. Augustine which has just three. However, I noticed that the National Aquarium in Baltimore keeps several individuals, but only two on exhibit so I think they went there.

As for saltwater crocodiles, I know Fort Worth Zoo has Salty, Toledo Zoo has Baru, and St Augustine Alligator Farm has breeding pair Maximo and Sydney, plus some of their offspring.

For Europe the Zoo Frankfurt - Gemany is the main-"producer" for freshwater crocs and many of them have been placed in other European zoos.

Years ago, my wife and I took a South Pacific ecocruise and visited Palau aquarium which displayed 2 medium size salties. We bought a tacky refrigerator magnet of a specimen.

as MRJ notes earlier, saltwater crocodiles are found throughout southeast Asia and there are bazillions of them captive there. (Disclaimer: bazillions may not be an entirely accurate number).

I've visited zoos in Asia which have dozens, sometimes hundreds, of saltwater crocs on display.

Freshwater crocodiles are just Australian though, so are much less common.

I believe that "Crocodiles of the world" in the UK hold three females obtained from a holder in France!

I think Thrigby has a saltwater crocodile. I believe Bergen aquarium had saltwater crocodiles which were being loaned from Denmark, but now they only have Philippine crocodiles.

Miri Crocodile Farm in Malaysia, Koh Samui Crocodile farm in Thailand and various other crocodile farms and in South-east Asia keep saltwater crocodiles (and often gharials as well).

But the 'zoo's' main focus is on saltwater crocodiles and they frequently breed them. There are also several lakes where the crocodiles live and different concrete enclosures as well (mainly for albino crocodiles).
It also sells crocodile meat on weekends, however I am not sure if the meat comes from a supplier or their animals (many of the crocodiles have 3 legs and/or look deformed in some other way).
