I mentioned earlier that the news clip showed two fossa cubs. In fact there are four. Four Furry Fossa Pups Face the World
Update on Africa Rocks Construction here: San Diego Zoo - New "Africa Rocks" complex at San Diego Zoo in 2016
Both left in 2015: Soman to a private facility in Fla and Surat to the Zoo of Baton Rouge. Both are now old enough to become breeders in their new locations. A new pair of young bachelor males entered late 2015 / early 2016.
Thank you very much for your help, Kifaru Bwana! "Soman in a private facility in Fla" do you mean White Oak or CCTU?
The black leopard is indeed on exhibit in Asian Leopards but is not necessarily moving to Africa Rocks. The zoo recently posted a photo of the cat on Facebook and someone asked if she will be moving to Africa Rocks. The zoo replied "we're not sure yet."
According to zoo FB page, they have just acquired a 4 month old Amur leopard named "Charlie, aka Axle." Some of the responses on the FB page allude to where he came from and the likelihood of another cub from a different source being sent. Since I don't know the validity of the claims I will not repeat them here, but you can look at FB if interested. The zoo did state he is on exhibit in Asian leopards "but isn't always out and about."
I can't remember where I read it, but this is the orphaned Amur Leopard cub from Sedgwick County Zoo. EDIT: The source was Sedgwick County Zoo's facebook page. Sedgwick County Zoo
That’s because the zoo now has 6-7 leopards (4 Amur and 2-3 (I forget) snow leopards) sharing 4 exhibits. The black leopard is very shy, so this cub was brought in to be a companion and hopefully make her a little more adventurous. To my knowledge the plan is still to move both to Africa Rocks.
Rafferty, a male Amur Leopard will be leaving from his home at the Hogle Zoo next week to be a companion to Charlie(Axle).
That makes 3 new Amur leopards all from different zoos. Asian Leopard space is getting pretty crowded.
Which is why it is probably best not to report plans on specific animal moves until the move has happened and the receiving zoo has announced it.
What is this? I am preparing for my visit and the forecast calls for near 100 degree temperatures (and over 100 at Safari Park)? In San Diego in late October? I never thought I would visit San Diego when it was cooler in Tucson.
