All the Walk-through Aviaries have been closed to visitors, and free flight birds have been grounded, due to the detection of virulent Newcastle Disease within San Diego County. I’m glad that they are doing what is necessary to protect the collection birds, but this is very sad news for visitors. There has been no statement on when the aviaries will reopen, but based on the incubation of Newcastle Disease, I expect it will be months.

Good that they're protecting their birds and visitors, though boy I'd be pretty disheartened to arrive and find all the aviaries closed... Hopefully nobody had a big trip planned to go see all the birds...

Best article I can find... not much available about the circumstances that I can find. SD Zoo takes precaution against Virulent Newcastle Disease

Well, we can at least be glad it's not Michael Eisner.

In an intersection of different interests, Michael Eisner is the current owner of the football team whose fortunes obsess me nearly as much as do caged animals - Portsmouth. When he took over I was deeply cynical. He’s actually shown himself to be a superb owner: not meddling, remaining calm, investing sensibly. He is massively popular amongst Pompey fans. I can think of many worse people to helm a zoo, but possibly as chair of the board rather than as CEO...

I figured that. I was just cracking a joke, since he made a lot of poor decisions in his Disney days.

I received word that the Zoo’s aviaries reopened as of 10am this morning. Hopefully there will be no new cases reported of Virulent Newcastle within the county.

I saw a photo on flickr that showed a new sloth bear at the zoo (the male offspring born in 2017 at Woodland Park Zoo). Does anyone know if the zoo has or is inquiring any other sloth bears?

Oh right :p Thanks. What are the origins of the parents at Woodland Park? I like to try and keep track of which Sloth Bears in the US are Sri Lankan and which are Indian (recent European imports).

Our 12-year-old female bonobo, Mali, has been transferred to the Ape Cognitive Conservation Initiative in Des Moines, Iowa as part of the SSP breeding program.
