Historically San Diego Zoo has had one of the best collections in the United States so I am creating this thread as a collection of species the zoo used to have, where they went, and when they arrived. Any species or exhibits the zoo had can be talked about here. This thread is open to anybody who has information on the topic but I will post every time I get new information.
You can check these two threads for more info: SDWAP c. 1990 [San Diego Zoo Safari Park] Field Exhibits ca. 1985 [San Diego Zoo Safari Park]
Thank these are both helpful. I have the old website from the safari park Welcome to the Wild Animal Park! This has multiple versions of the website from different times. also this old map It's slightly blurry but you can still read some of the animals listings
The zoo had two sections that both had a large number of species and are now gone so here are all the animals I know. The parentheses are where they are located now. If there are no parentheses then I don't know where they are. Also, these species are since the exhibits opened so some of them might be a little weird (for example almost all of the ungulates in dog and cat canyon were in the same exhibit) Horn and Hoof Mesa Masai Giraffe (Urban Jungle) Mishmi Takin (either left the zoo or in off-exhibit holding between Elephant valley and Northern Frontier) Sichuan Takin (Panda Canyon) Ankole cattle (Safari Park, African Savana) Lowland Anoa Javan Banteng (Safari Park, Asian Savana) Zambian Sable Antelope Grey Rhebok Visayan warty pig Addax Common Duiker Sichuan Deer Barbary Deer (off-exhibit holding between Elephant valley and Northern Frontier) Sommerings Gazelle (off-exhibit holding between Elephant valley and Northern Frontier) Spanish Ibex (died out possibly) Giant Forest Hog (died out Possibly) Calamian Deer Bawean deer pampas deer Mountain Anoa Wisent Dog and Cat Canyon New Guinea Singing Dog Striped Hyena Chinese Goral Himalayan Goral Saiga Siberian Big Horn Sheep Chinese Dholes Bharal (some hunting ranges and private ranches in texas) East Caucasian Tur, Japanese Serow Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep Desert bighorn sheep Spanish ibex Rocky mountain goat Dalls sheep Masai klipspringer Yellow-footed rock wallaby Jaguar Snow Leopard Siberian Lynx Hornbills North Chinese Leopard(kopje exhibit, now deceased) Mountain Lion Bactrian Camel
Some of the unusual ones I remember seeing personally are: saiga (both zoo and park) bharal (zoo) Turkmenistan caracal (zoo) Mongolian wolf (zoo) royal antelope (zoo) northern white rhinoceros (park) Persian & North China leopard (zoo) West Mexican margay (zoo)
I already knew about a few of those but these three are wild. It shows how crazy San Diegos collection has been, it's a shame so many of these special species have been removed from the public collection.
Asian Passage species Giant Panda (sent back to China) Red Cheeked Gibbon (returned to Los Angles Zoo) Manchurian Black Bear spotted Hyena Lion tailed macaque Siberian musk deer (maybe it don't think their exhibit is still their but a current species list says they are still on some form of hillside exhibit) sloth bear kodiak bear
West Mexican margay (a pair) were in a small (way too small) cage across from the old elephant exhibit, which is where they are currently doing the paid close encounters (or were last I was there). Amur leopard cat was in Cat Canyon in the small carnivore cages on opposite side of road from the big cats. Mongolian Wolf was in Cat Canyon in one of the big cat cages. Persian and North China leopards were in the bottom two of the big cat cages (though later the last North China leopard was at the top in the newer glass fronted case that held serval last time I was there). Gordon's or Arabian wildcat has been at various places, including some former small cages below Cat Canyon (across from pandas) and even (way out of place) in Polar Bear Plunge in the pine marten exhibit (or whatever is in there now). Royal antelope were in a small enclosure behind the former tree kangaroo exhibit.
I think they all naturally died out with the possible exception of the Mongolian wolves. Those may have been a loan from overseas that was sent back. (I am not sure about this, it's just my hunch).
Here's a photo I have of a Mongolian Wolf in one of the old enclosures in Dog & Cat Canyon. (Now Africa Rocks)
