Interesting here, apart from the very deplorable fact inadequate veterinary and medical care and managerial oversight seem to have been implicated in the hippos death, is that the local environmental activists' group UNES makes a case for sufficient resources for the zoo to enable it to adequately manage and care for the collection. What needs following up now is: a) do they have veterinary care and qualified personnel; b) what (dis-)qualifies current zoo management - as it seems initial claims .. from the zoo mentioned a public stabbing incident - where it seemed cause of death was hemorrhaging from a lung puncture and detoriating condition over 17-days' "illness" - ... c) what managerial capacity (general, curatorial, education, conservation officer) is around?
