Katniss and Peeta the Asian Small-Clawed Otters are back on exhibit. Mary Lou the American Alligator also has a new exhibit. A new pathway with these two exhibits will open on Saturday, and is a phase of the Discovery Pavilion.

One of the zoo's young female Masai giraffes, "Asha", has left for the Toledo Zoo. Their other young male, "Buttercup", will be leaving for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park either at the end of this year or early next year.

Buttercup is actually a male. He is slated to one day become San Diego's new breeding bull. Both of the calves are extremely important in terms of genetic value. Dad Shomari/Michael is the most genetically valuable bull in North America. He is one of two surviving great grandchildren of Toronto Zoo's Heidi who was a European import. Basically any animal descending from Toronto Zoo's original bull or cows are among the most genetically valuable Masai Giraffes in North America. Michael just happens to be the top male while his sister Mstari is the top female.

It's great to hear another calf has arrived safely but even better that it will be joined in July by a half sibling. What's better then one giraffe calf? Two.
