Don't think this has been mentioned yet but politics can also get in the way of species being lost. Apart from importation blocks there are laws which ban certain species from being imported (ex. US laws against importing any deer or mongoose species) as well as strict regulations and red tape involving working with certain species (ex. Red and Mexican Wolves in the US) that can potentially cause collections to not find the species worth the effort.

    Species we have lost......

Picking up on species not being maintained in private hands, being able to sell surplus animals may be a factor. Three species imported, bred and eventually sold by the Wildfowl Trust (as it then was): Trumpeter Swan ( then considered to be rare in the wild), Nene and Laysan Teal. All three are now common in aviculture, and most zoos do not bother with them, or need to. Unfortunately the last named is now bedevilled with colour mutations, but that's a whole other issue.
Certainly the large captive population of Nene is a useful reserve population. Maybe the Pink Pigeon could have gone the same way. Maybe the sheer difficulty of propagating it would have stopped it ever becoming common in aviculture.

These are good points. When species are kept for multiple generations it is common for private breeders to breed colour mutations or for large well marked animals. What is happening is rapid domestication, and these long-term populations are of limited use for restocking wild populations.

While mutations are becoming all too common in ducks, most of the pheasant species maintained in aviculture are free of this, and at least look right. Any reintroduction project involving them, would still have to undergo a lot of selection in the rewilded state, to make up for years of inadvertent selection for invisible characteristics that help them survive in captivity. Having said that, better to have a species in an altered state, than not have it at all.

Good points, but game farm strains of Ring-neck Pheasants have very poor survival when released. Their fittness to survive as wild birds compromised by years of selection in game-farms.

Agree better to have captive strains than none at all.

Wouldn't surprise me; this is the case for quite a few of the bird taxa - and even some of the mammal species - which I have highlighted thus far.

A brief stop-press to highlight a recent loss which (given my interests) is particularly sad:

Saharan Striped Weasel (Ictonyx libycus) - last held in 2016 at Plzen. There are numerous photographs of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery, including the following image:

Thinking on it, I might as well do an actual catch-up post of taxa lost since I started this thread....... rather than do a comprehensive list of species lost since I started this thread, I'll just highlight the most noteworthy:

Pallid Scops-owl (Otus brucei) - last held in 2016 at Scottish Owl Centre. There are a small number of images of this taxon within the Zoochat gallery, including the following photograph of the last individual in Europe.

What has happened to RSCC's Fanaloka? They had - at least 1.1.1. - and they were still present and (apparently) thriving when the IZES meeting was there in October.

I know that some boky have turned up elsewhere but I wasn't sure how many he had. At least these have stayed in the UK! :p

Any idea where the fosa went?
