In an old article ( 1997 ) I found some very intresting information about the Speke's gazelle-population in North America. The orgin of the N-A population began 1969 when St. Louis Zoo imported 1 male and 2 females. In 1972 another female came to St. Louis from the Lincoln Zoo in Chicago. Those 4 animals were the start of the N-A population and by 1983 other zoos had also recieved Speke's gazelles, all bred at St. Louis ( among them San Diego WAP and the Gladys Porter Zoo - Brownsville ) The National Zoo - Washington recieved 4 Speke's gazelles at the end of 1996. 1991 the zoo-population was 40 animals but went down to 24 in 1994. Two years later the St. Louis Zoo managed to import 2 new females from Quatar so ( AFAIK ) the total-founder-population for the current population is 1 male and 5 females ! The latest ISIS-listing I was able to find is from Januari 2010 and the following US-zoos were keeping Speke's gazelles ( no Canadian zoos on the list ) : -Saint Louis 7-10 -Jacksonville 2-3 -Los Angeles 5-7 -Milwaukee 2-0 -Nat. Zoo Washington 1-0 -Or Wild F * 1-0 -Phoenix 2-0 -Portland 1-3 -San Antonio 1-4 -San Diego Zoo 6-9 -Tucson 3-0 ( * anybody an idea which collection could be ment by Or Wild F ? ) The total kept in 2010 was thus 31-36. Next to this sub-population the ISIS listed 4 other collections from the Middle East which where keeping Speke's gazelles : -Al Ain 3-7 -Al Wabra 23-34 -Maktoum 6-6 -Safa Wild * 19-32 ( * also not known which collection is ment with this one ) which makes a second sub-population of 51-79 animals. In Europe the species is currently not kept and historicly Zootierliste list only 6 former keepers: Hannover Kronberg Napoli Doha Al Ain ( the last 2 collections not in Europe but Zootierliste list them ) I've some questions about the US-population : Has anybody a more recent overview of the current population ? Does anyone know if there have been later imports of new founders ( 1 male and 5 females seem to be a very small founder-group ! ) Any further information about the species is of course also very welcome !
I haven't taken the time to trace the full list of founders, but it appears that there was an additional male, "Greenie," who was a founder imported in September 1969 to St. Louis and dying there 8 years later. As of December 31, 2017, the AZA Population consisted of: Dallas Zoo: 0.3 Los Angeles Zoo: 1.2 Oregon Zoo: 3.1 Pueblo Zoo: 2.0 San Antonio Zoo: 0.1 San Diego Zoo: 7.20 St. Louis Zoo: 6.8 Reid Park Zoo: 3.0 Total: 22.35 (57)
